Getting Started

This guide will walk you through using MiTensión for the first time, from recording your first measurement to viewing your blood pressure history in the calendar.
Make sure you have installed MiTensión on your device. See the Installation Guide if you haven’t done so yet.

First Launch

When you launch MiTensión for the first time:
1

Grant Notification Permission

On Android 13 and higher, the app will request permission to send notifications.

Why does MiTensión need notification permission? The app sends periodic reminders (every 2 hours) to help you remember to take your blood pressure measurements. This is completely optional.
  • Tap Allow to enable reminders
  • Tap Don’t allow if you prefer to track measurements manually
You can change this later in your device settings.
2

Understand the Main Screen

You’ll see the Measurement Screen with:
  • Title: Shows the current period and measurement number (e.g., “Mañana - Medición 1/3”)
  • Systolic field: “La Alta (sistólica)” - your systolic blood pressure
  • Diastolic field: “La Baja (diastólica)” - your diastolic blood pressure
  • Two buttons: “Guardar” (Save) and “Ver Calendario” (View Calendar)

Recording Your First Measurement

Let’s record your first blood pressure measurement.
1

Check the Current Period

The app automatically determines which period you’re in based on the current time:
  • Morning (Mañana): 12:01 AM - 12:30 PM
  • Afternoon (Tarde): 12:31 PM - 7:00 PM
  • Night (Noche): 7:01 PM - 12:00 AM
The title at the top shows which period is active.
2

Enter Systolic Value

  1. Tap on the “La Alta (sistólica)” field (it shows “Pulsa para añadir”)
  2. A dialog will appear with a numeric keyboard
  3. Enter your systolic value (e.g., 120)
  4. Tap Confirmar or press the Done button on the keyboard
You can enter values up to 3 digits. The input only accepts numbers.
3

Enter Diastolic Value

  1. Tap on the “La Baja (diastólica)” field
  2. Enter your diastolic value (e.g., 80)
  3. Tap Confirmar
4

Save the Measurement

  1. Tap the “Guardar” button
  2. You’ll see a success message: “¡Medición guardada con éxito!”
  3. The app will automatically clear the fields for your next measurement
  4. The title updates to show “Medición 2/3”
Each measurement is automatically timestamped and stored in the local database.

Understanding Blood Pressure Classifications

MiTensión automatically classifies your measurements according to AHA guidelines:

Low (Baja)

Systolic < 90 or Diastolic < 60Color indicator: Blue

Normal

Systolic < 120 and Diastolic < 80Color indicator: Green

Elevated (Elevada)

Systolic 120-129 and Diastolic < 80Color indicator: Orange

High Stage 1 (Alta 1)

Systolic 130-139 or Diastolic 80-89Color indicator: Red

High Stage 2 (Alta 2)

Systolic ≥ 140 or Diastolic ≥ 90Color indicator: Crimson

Crisis

Systolic > 180 or Diastolic > 120Color indicator: Dark Red
If you get a “Crisis Hipertensiva” reading, seek immediate medical attention. This app is for tracking only and does not replace medical advice.

Multiple Measurements Per Period

MiTensión allows you to record up to 3 measurements per period to get a more accurate average.
1

Record Additional Measurements

After saving your first measurement:
  1. Wait a few minutes (recommended by medical guidelines)
  2. Enter your second measurement
  3. Tap Guardar again
  4. Repeat for the third measurement
2

Period Complete

After recording 3 measurements for a period:
  • The title changes to “Ya has completado las mediciones de [Period]”
  • You’ll see a message indicating when the next period starts
  • You can still access the calendar to view your measurements
3

Next Period

When the next period begins:
  • The app automatically resets to “Medición 1/3”
  • You can start recording measurements for the new period
The app calculates the average of your measurements for each period automatically. These averages are displayed in the calendar view.

Viewing Your Calendar

The calendar provides a visual overview of all your measurements.
1

Open Calendar View

From the measurement screen, tap “Ver Calendario” button.
2

  • Transparent bar: No measurements for that period
  • The color indicates the average blood pressure classification for that period
4

View Color Legend

To see what each color means:
  1. Tap the three-dot menu icon in the top-right corner
  2. Select “Leyenda de colores” (Color Legend)
  3. A dialog shows all classifications and their colors
  4. Tap “Cerrar” to close the legend

Tap on any day in the calendar to view detailed information about measurements for that specific day.

Common Scenarios

If you try to save without entering both systolic and diastolic values, you’ll see an error:“Ambos campos, Alta y Baja, son obligatorios.”Both fields are required. Simply enter the missing value and tap Save again.
Currently, the app focuses on recording new measurements. To maintain data integrity:
  • Recorded measurements cannot be edited directly through the UI
  • Make sure your values are correct before tapping “Guardar”
The app will show an error message:“Ya has completado los 3 registros para este período. El siguiente período empieza en [time].”Wait for the next period to start recording more measurements.
Measurements are timestamped when saved and automatically assigned to the current period. The app is designed for real-time tracking:
  • Always record measurements as you take them
  • The timestamp cannot be manually adjusted
No! MiTensión works completely offline:
  • All measurements are stored locally on your device
  • No internet connection required
  • Your data never leaves your device

Setting Up Reminders

MiTensión automatically schedules periodic reminders to help you maintain consistent tracking. Reminder Configuration:
  • Frequency: Every 2 hours
  • Technology: WorkManager (Android’s recommended task scheduler)
  • Battery Impact: Minimal - WorkManager optimizes execution
Reminder Notification:
Title: "¡Es hora de registrar tu tensión!"
Message: "Aún te faltan X mediciones para completar el período de la [period]."
The notification shows how many measurements you still need for the current period.
Reminders require notification permission. If you denied permission initially, you can enable it later in your device Settings > Apps > MiTensión > Permissions.

Tips for Best Results

Consistent Timing

Try to measure your blood pressure at the same times each day for more accurate tracking.

Rest Before Measuring

Sit quietly for 5 minutes before taking your blood pressure.

Multiple Readings

Use all 3 measurement slots per period. The app averages them for better accuracy.

Regular Tracking

Record measurements in all three periods (morning, afternoon, night) for comprehensive monitoring.

Multi-Language Support

MiTensión supports three languages based on your device settings:
  • La Alta (sistólica) / La Baja (diastólica)
  • Mañana / Tarde / Noche
  • Guardar / Ver Calendario
To change the language:
  1. Go to your device Settings > System > Languages
  2. Change your system language
  3. Reopen MiTensión
