Requirements

AnkiDroid must be installed before you can use AnkiDroid Companion. The app relies on AnkiDroid’s API to function and cannot work independently.
Before installing AnkiDroid Companion, ensure your device meets the following requirements:
  • Android Version: Android 8.0 (API level 26) or higher
  • AnkiDroid: Must be installed and configured on your device
  • Storage: Minimal space required (~5MB for the APK)

AnkiDroid Companion is distributed as an APK file through GitHub releases.

Navigate to releases

Download the latest APK

Find the latest release and download the .apk file to your Android device.

Installation Steps

Enable installation from unknown sources

Since the app is not on the Play Store, you’ll need to enable installation from unknown sources:
  1. Open your device’s Settings
  2. Navigate to Security or Privacy
  3. Enable Install unknown apps for your browser or file manager

Install the APK

  1. Open the downloaded APK file from your notifications or file manager
  2. Tap Install when prompted
  3. Wait for the installation to complete
  4. Tap Open to launch the app, or Done to finish

Verify installation

You should now see AnkiDroid Companion in your app drawer. The app is ready for initial setup.
If you encounter any issues during installation, ensure that AnkiDroid is properly installed and working on your device first.

Version Compatibility

AnkiDroid Companion is built using AnkiDroid API version v2.17alpha8. The app should work with:
  • AnkiDroid v2.17+: Full compatibility
  • Earlier versions: May work but not officially tested
Always keep both AnkiDroid and AnkiDroid Companion updated to the latest versions for the best experience and compatibility.
