Comments power the discussion side of oForum. With support for threaded replies, upvoting, and link formatting, comments create engaging conversations around posts.

Adding Comments

To participate in a discussion:
1

Navigate to a Post

Open any post to see its comment section.
2

Write Your Comment

Find the comment textarea at the top of the discussion section.
3

Format Your Text

Use the link syntax <https://example.com> to add clickable links.
4

Submit

Click “submit” or press Cmd/Ctrl + Enter to post your comment.
You must be logged in to comment. Comments appear immediately after submission.

Threaded Replies

oForum supports nested comment threads for organized discussions.

Replying to Comments

1

Find the Reply Link

Click “reply” next to any comment you want to respond to.
2

Write Your Reply

A reply form will appear directly under the comment.
3

Submit Your Reply

Your reply will be nested under the parent comment, showing the conversation flow.

Comment Threading Structure

Comments are displayed in a tree structure:
  • Root comments: Top-level comments appear on the left edge
  • Replies: Nested comments are indented 24 pixels per level
  • Visual borders: A left border shows the nesting hierarchy
  • Depth tracking: Each comment knows its depth in the thread
Use the [-] button next to a comment to collapse its entire thread. This is helpful for navigating long discussions. Click [+] to expand it again.

Comment Depth and Nesting

oForum allows unlimited nesting depth for comment threads. The depth is calculated automatically:
  • Depth 0: Root comments (direct replies to the post)
  • Depth 1: Replies to root comments
  • Depth 2+: Replies to replies, and so on
Each additional level is indented further to show the conversation hierarchy. While there’s no hard limit on depth, very deep threads may become narrow on smaller screens.

Upvoting Comments

Just like posts, you can upvote comments to highlight valuable contributions.
1

Find the Upvote Arrow

Look for the triangle arrow next to the comment author’s name.
2

Click to Upvote

The arrow will be highlighted when you’ve upvoted.
3

Points Display

The comment’s point count updates immediately.
Comment points contribute to the author’s reputation score, which appears on their profile and the leaderboard.
Upvotes on comments are treated equally to post upvotes when calculating user reputation.

Editing and Deleting Comments

Deleting Your Comments

You can delete comments you’ve written:
1

Locate Your Comment

Find the comment you want to delete.
2

Click Delete

Look for the “delete” link in the comment metadata (it only appears on your own comments).
3

Confirm Deletion

Confirm when prompted. The comment will be permanently removed.
  • Deletion is permanent and cannot be undone
  • If your comment has replies, those replies will also be deleted
  • This removes the entire sub-thread under your comment
oForum currently doesn’t support editing comments after posting. Read through your comment before submitting, or delete and repost if you need to make corrections.
Comments support simple link formatting:
Check out this article: <https://example.com>
Or this discussion: <https://forum.example/thread>
The angle bracket syntax automatically converts URLs into clickable links. This keeps formatting simple and consistent across the forum.
Add context around your links so readers know what they’re clicking on. Instead of just posting a URL, explain why it’s relevant to the discussion.

Markdown Support

While oForum keeps formatting minimal, text is displayed with:
  • Whitespace preservation: Line breaks and spacing are maintained
  • Pre-wrapped text: Long lines wrap naturally
  • Link detection: URLs in angle brackets become clickable
This approach keeps the interface clean while ensuring your formatting intentions are preserved.
Full markdown (bold, italic, headers, etc.) is not supported. The focus is on content over formatting complexity.

Comment Chronology

Comments are displayed in chronological order:
  • Sort order: Oldest comments appear first (creation time ascending)
  • Natural flow: Conversations read like a timeline
  • No re-sorting: Unlike posts, comments don’t get reordered based on votes
This ensures discussions flow naturally and context is preserved, regardless of which comments receive more upvotes.

Keyboard Shortcuts

Speed up your commenting with keyboard shortcuts:
  • Cmd/Ctrl + Enter: Submit the comment or reply you’re currently writing
  • Works in any comment or reply textarea
  • Applies to both top-level comments and threaded replies
After writing your comment, press Cmd/Ctrl + Enter to submit without reaching for the mouse.
