jo runs 100% locally on your Mac. Your data never leaves your device unless you explicitly choose to send a specific conversation to a cloud model.

Core privacy guarantee

Nothing leaves your Mac. Your notes, photos, emails, and files stay exactly where they are. Nothing is uploaded. Nothing is shared. Nothing leaves your machine. Ever.

What this means

  • All AI processing happens on your Mac’s Neural Engine
  • Your indexed data is stored in an encrypted database locally
  • No external servers ever see your personal content
  • No account required, no data collection, no tracking

How we guarantee this

You don’t have to take our word for it. Here’s how you can verify:

1. No network calls for your data

Open Activity Monitor while using jo. You’ll see zero outbound connections to our servers for your content.
Try it yourself:
  1. Open Activity Monitor (Applications → Utilities)
  2. Search for “jo” in the process list
  3. Check the Network tab
  4. Ask jo several questions about your data
  5. Verify zero outbound data transfer

2. All processing on-device

The AI model runs locally on your Mac’s Neural Engine. Your queries never leave your machine.
  • Local model: Runs entirely on your M-series chip
  • Neural Engine: Uses dedicated AI hardware built into your Mac
  • No cloud inference: For searches and summaries of your personal data

3. Verifiable architecture

jo uses Apple’s native APIs (same as Spotlight). We can’t access your data even if we wanted to.
Open to audit: Security researchers can verify our claims. Email [email protected] for technical documentation.

4. Source code transparency

We’re open about how jo works:
  • Documentation of all APIs used
  • Network architecture diagrams available
  • Privacy implementation details published
  • Third-party security audits welcomed

What data stays local

Everything jo indexes remains on your Mac:

Personal files

Documents, notes, and local files never leave your Mac

Photos

Your entire photo library stays local. No uploads, ever.

Email content

Email is indexed locally via IMAP. Content never uploaded.

Messages

iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram processed locally on your Mac

Calendar

Events and meetings indexed locally, never synced externally

Browsing history

Browser history stays on your Mac, never sent to servers

Optional cloud models

While jo runs locally, you can optionally use cloud models for complex tasks.

When you might use cloud models

  • Complex reasoning tasks
  • Advanced analysis
  • Specialized capabilities (coding, math, etc.)
  • When you need extra computing power
You control what’s shared: When you call a cloud model, only that specific conversation is sent—never your full indexed data.

Available cloud models

  • GPT (OpenAI)
  • Claude (Anthropic)
  • Gemini (Google)
  • Grok (xAI)

Privacy with cloud models

When you use a cloud model:
  1. You explicitly choose to send that conversation
  2. Only the conversation is sent, not your entire data
  3. You control the context that gets included
  4. No training on your data — cloud providers have contracts preventing this
Local by default: Most queries run completely locally. Cloud models are opt-in for when you need extra power.

Privacy vs. other tools

vs. ChatGPT

ChatGPT requires uploading files to external servers. jo already knows your stuff because it lives on your machine, not theirs. ChatGPT:
  • Lives in the cloud
  • Requires uploading your files
  • Your data on their servers
  • Training data concerns
jo:
  • Lives on your Mac
  • Never uploads your files
  • Your data stays local
  • No training on your data

vs. Rewind

Rewind records your screen (privacy nightmare). jo reads your actual files using the same APIs Apple uses. Rewind:
  • Records everything on your screen
  • Screenshots of sensitive data
  • Captures passwords, banking, etc.
  • Visual recordings stored
jo:
  • Reads actual files via Apple APIs
  • No screenshots or recordings
  • Respects app-level permissions
  • Semantic indexing only
jo doesn’t take screenshots or record your screen. It reads your actual files using secure APIs, just like Spotlight does.

vs. Cloud note apps

Notion, Evernote, and others store your notes on their servers. Cloud note apps:
  • All notes on their servers
  • Subject to their privacy policies
  • Potential data breaches
  • Third-party access
jo:
  • Indexes your existing Apple Notes
  • Everything stays on your Mac
  • You control your data
  • No third-party servers

System security

jo respects macOS’s built-in security features.

Permissions

jo asks for explicit permissions:
  • Photos: Access to Photos library
  • Contacts: Access to Contacts
  • Calendar: Access to Calendar events
  • Files: Access to specified directories
You approve each permission via macOS’s standard permission dialogs.
macOS protection: If jo tries to access something without permission, macOS blocks it and prompts you to approve or deny.

Encryption

jo’s local index is encrypted:
  • At rest: Encrypted database on your Mac
  • In memory: Secure memory handling
  • No plain text: Sensitive data never stored in plain text

App sandboxing

jo runs in macOS’s app sandbox:
  • Limited system access
  • Can’t access other users’ data
  • Restricted to approved directories
  • Monitored by macOS security

No account required

jo doesn’t require creating an account. What this means:
  • No username/password
  • No email collection
  • No personal information shared
  • No tracking across devices
Anonymous usage: Even for analytics, jo doesn’t know who you are. We see anonymous usage patterns, never personal data or queries.

GDPR and compliance

Because jo processes everything locally:
  • GDPR compliant: Your data never leaves your device
  • CCPA compliant: No personal data collected or sold
  • HIPAA friendly: Suitable for sensitive information
  • Attorney-client privilege: Safe for legal professionals
For professionals: Lawyers, doctors, therapists, and other professionals with confidentiality requirements can use jo without concern. Your data stays completely private.

Uninstalling jo

When you uninstall jo:
  1. Index deleted: All indexed data is removed
  2. Original files safe: Your Notes, Photos, Mail, etc. are untouched
  3. No traces: No data left on external servers (there are none)
  4. Complete removal: Standard Mac app uninstall
Clean uninstall: Simply drag jo to the Trash. All indexed data goes with it. Your original data in Apple Notes, Photos, Mail, etc. remains exactly as it was.

Questions about privacy

”How can I be sure my data doesn’t leave my Mac?”

You can verify it:
  • Monitor network activity in Activity Monitor
  • Review our technical documentation
  • Contact [email protected] for audit details
  • Use a network monitoring tool to verify zero outbound data

”What if I use cloud models?”

You explicitly choose to send a conversation to a cloud model. Only that specific conversation is sent, never your full data index.

”Can jo employees see my data?”

No. jo employees cannot see your data because it never leaves your Mac. There’s nothing for us to see on our servers because we don’t have your data.

”What about analytics?”

We collect anonymous usage analytics:
  • Which features are used (not what you searched for)
  • Performance metrics
  • Crash reports
  • No personal data, queries, or content
Never your content: We never see your queries, your search results, or any of your personal data. Only anonymous usage patterns.

Privacy promise

jo’s privacy promise is simple:
Your data lives on your Mac. All AI processing happens on your Mac. Nothing leaves your Mac unless you explicitly choose to send a specific conversation to a cloud model. No accounts, no tracking, no exceptions.
This isn’t marketing. It’s our architecture. We built it this way on purpose.
