The Modrinth launcher makes it easy to install mods from the Modrinth platform, either through the web browser or directly in the app.

Finding Mods on Modrinth

Browse and search for mods on modrinth.com or within the launcher itself:
  • Filter by game version, mod loader (Fabric, Forge, Quilt, NeoForge), and categories
  • View mod details, screenshots, and compatibility information
  • Check download counts, ratings, and recent updates
  • Read mod descriptions and changelogs

One-Click Installation

The easiest way to install mods is using the one-click installation feature.
  1. Browse to any mod page on modrinth.com
  2. Click the Install button
  3. Select the target profile/instance from the popup
  4. The mod will automatically download and install
Make sure you have the Modrinth launcher installed and running for one-click installation to work from the browser.

Manual Installation

You can also manually add mod files to your instance:
1

Download the mod file

Download the .jar file for your mod from Modrinth or another source. Make sure it matches your Minecraft version and mod loader.
2

Open your instance folder

In the launcher, right-click your profile and select Open Folder or navigate to:
  • Windows: %APPDATA%/ModrinthApp/profiles/[instance-name]/mods
  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/ModrinthApp/profiles/[instance-name]/mods
  • Linux: ~/.local/share/ModrinthApp/profiles/[instance-name]/mods
3

Copy the mod file

Place the downloaded .jar file into the mods folder.
4

Restart the launcher

The launcher will detect the new mod and add it to your instance.
Manually installed mods won’t have automatic update detection. Consider using the launcher’s built-in installation for better mod management.

Dependency Resolution

The Modrinth launcher automatically handles mod dependencies:
  • Required dependencies: Automatically downloaded and installed alongside the main mod
  • Optional dependencies: Presented as suggestions that you can choose to install
  • Incompatible mods: Warnings displayed if conflicts are detected
When installing a mod that requires other mods (like Fabric API for Fabric mods), the launcher will prompt you to install all required dependencies.

Mod Compatibility Checking

The launcher performs several compatibility checks:
Mods are filtered by your instance’s Minecraft version. Only compatible versions are shown.
Mods are filtered by your mod loader type:
  • Fabric: Requires Fabric Loader
  • Forge: Requires Forge
  • Quilt: Requires Quilt Loader
  • NeoForge: Requires NeoForge
The launcher prevents installing mods designed for different loaders.
The launcher checks whether mods are:
  • Client-only: Only needed on the player’s side
  • Server-only: Only needed on the server side
  • Both: Required on both sides
  • Unsupported: Won’t work on a particular side
If a mod conflicts with an already installed mod, the launcher will warn you before installation.

Managing Installed Mods

Once mods are installed, you can manage them from your instance:
  • Enable/Disable: Toggle mods on or off without uninstalling (adds .disabled extension)
  • Update: Check for and install mod updates
  • Remove: Uninstall mods you no longer want
  • View Details: See mod information, version, and dependencies
Disabling a mod instead of removing it is useful for troubleshooting. You can quickly test if a mod is causing issues without fully uninstalling it.

Troubleshooting

Mod Not Appearing In-Game

  1. Verify the mod is enabled (not disabled)
  2. Check that you’re using the correct Minecraft version
  3. Ensure all required dependencies are installed
  4. Restart your game completely

Compatibility Issues

  • Review the mod’s requirements on its Modrinth page
  • Check for known incompatibilities in the mod description
  • Try disabling other mods to identify conflicts
  • Ensure your mod loader version is up to date

Installation Fails

  • Check your internet connection
  • Verify you have sufficient disk space
  • Try closing and reopening the launcher
  • Check the launcher logs for detailed error messages
