Resume Analysis & Retrieval-Augmented Generation

How It Works

The platform uses a sophisticated RAG pipeline to personalize your interview experience:
  1. Document Parsing: Extracts text from PDF/DOCX files using PyPDF2 and python-docx
  2. Semantic Vectorization: Converts your skills, projects, and experience into 384-dimensional vectors using Sentence Transformers (all-MiniLM-L6-v2)
  3. FAISS Indexing: Creates a searchable vector database specific to your background
  4. Contextual Question Generation: When you practice, the system retrieves relevant sections of your resume and generates questions interviewers might actually ask

Key Features

  • Project-Based Questions: “Tell me about your experience with [specific project from your resume]”
  • Skill Verification: Questions that test your claimed expertise (e.g., if you list React, expect hooks/state management questions)
  • Gap Analysis: Identifies missing skills for target roles by comparing your resume to job descriptions
  • Semantic Job Matching: Calculates similarity scores between your resume and job postings
Resumes are indexed per user in resume_faiss/user_<id>/ directories. The system maintains separate indices for privacy and multi-user support.

Mock Interviews with Real-Time Audio Analysis

Live Interview Simulation

Experience interviews that feel real with comprehensive analysis:

Parallel Processing Architecture

The platform uses a dual-stream approach during live interviews: Stream A: Signal Processing (Immediate)
  • Analyzes raw audio bytes in real-time
  • Calculates volume (RMS), pitch (YIN algorithm), and pause detection
  • Updates running statistics using Welford’s algorithm for memory efficiency
  • No external API dependency
Stream B: Semantic Processing (Streaming)
  • Forwards audio to AssemblyAI for real-time transcription
  • Provides live captioning so you see what the system “hears”
  • Falls back to local Faster-Whisper if API unavailable

Metrics Tracked

MetricWhat It MeasuresWhy It Matters
Speaking Rate (WPM)Words per minute during active speechToo fast = nervous, too slow = unprepared
Pause RatioSilence vs. speaking timeHigh ratio = hesitation, overthinking
Pitch StabilityVoice frequency consistency (Coefficient of Variation)Unstable pitch = lack of confidence
Pitch RangeF0 variation across answerMonotone = disengaged, wide range = enthusiastic
Confidence ScoreVoice steadiness (shimmer/jitter analysis)Detects tremors that indicate nervousness
Filler Word Count”um”, “uh”, “like”, “you know”Professional communication metric

Post-Interview Feedback

After completing a mock interview, you receive:
  • Transcript: Full text of what you said
  • Speech Analysis: Visual graphs of your pitch, volume, and pacing over time

Automatic Difficulty Classification

Every question is categorized as Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced using keyword-based heuristics:
  • Beginner: Definitions, basic concepts (“What is a database?”, “Define polymorphism”)
  • Intermediate: Application, comparisons (“Explain 2PL vs Optimistic Concurrency”)
  • Advanced: Architecture, trade-offs (“Design a distributed transaction system”)

Topic Detection

The system automatically detects question topics using keyword rules defined in config/topic_rules.json. When you ask a question naturally, it classifies it and enhances retrieval:
# User asks: "What is process scheduling?"
# System detects: topic="OS", subtopic="Process Management"
# Enhanced query: "Question about Process Management in OS: What is process scheduling?"
# Result: More accurate FAISS retrieval

Adaptive Learning System

Mastery Tracking

The platform maintains a comprehensive profile of your knowledge:

User Mastery Model

For each topic, the system tracks:
  • Mastery Level (0-1): Overall competence score
  • Semantic Average: How well your answers match ideal responses
  • Keyword Average: Coverage of required technical terms
  • Questions Attempted: Total practice count
  • Correct Count: Successful answers
  • Response Time: Average time to answer
  • Mastery Velocity: Rate of improvement over time

Concept-Level Granularity

Beyond topic-level tracking, the system identifies:
  • Strong Concepts: Consistently answered correctly (>80% accuracy)
  • Weak Concepts: Needs improvement (<60% accuracy)
  • Missing Concepts: Never encountered in your practice
  • Stagnant Concepts: No improvement over last 5 attempts
{
  "topic": "DBMS",
  "mastery_level": 0.72,
  "sessions_attempted": 15,
  "questions_attempted": 87,
  "correct_count": 63,
  "mastery_velocity": 0.08,
  "strong_concepts": ["SQL Basics", "Normalization"],
  "weak_concepts": ["Query Optimization", "Indexing"],
  "missing_concepts": ["Distributed Transactions"]
}

Difficulty Adaptation

The platform automatically adjusts question difficulty:
  • Consecutive Good Answers (3+): Difficulty increases
  • Consecutive Poor Answers (2+): Difficulty decreases
  • Mixed Performance: Stays at current level
This ensures you’re always challenged but not overwhelmed.

Personalized Action Plans

Based on your mastery data, the AI generates structured study plans:
  1. Identifies Weak Concepts: Finds your bottom 20% concepts
