Overview

The leaderboard system tracks student performance across the Maths Society Platform, displaying rankings separated by key stage to ensure fair competition among students at similar academic levels.

Key Stage Leaderboards

The platform maintains three separate leaderboards:

KS3 Leaderboard

Years 7-8Foundation mathematics students competing at the same level

KS4 Leaderboard

Years 9-11GCSE-level students tackling more advanced challenges

KS5 Leaderboard

Years 12-13A-Level students solving university-prep problems
You only compete with students in your own key stage, ensuring challenges and rankings are appropriate for your academic year.

How Points Are Earned

Challenge Completion

Points are awarded when you complete entire challenges (all answer boxes correct):
  • +3 points: First person to complete a challenge
  • +1 point: Subsequent completions of the same challenge
You must complete ALL parts of a challenge to earn points. Partial completion doesn’t contribute to your leaderboard score.

Points Accumulation

Your leaderboard entry tracks:
  • Total Score: Cumulative points from all completed challenges
  • Last Updated: Timestamp of your most recent point gain
  • Ranking: Your position relative to other students in your key stage

Leaderboard Display

Top 20 Rankings

Each key stage leaderboard shows:
  • Top 20 students by score
  • Student names
  • Total points
  • Last activity timestamp
The leaderboards are sorted by score in descending order, with ties broken by most recent activity.
Leaderboards update in real-time as students complete challenges and earn points.

Recent Activity Feed

The leaderboard page displays recent platform activity, including:

Challenge Completions

Shows when students solve challenges with the challenge title and timestamp

The activity feed shows the 15 most recent events across all key stages, creating a dynamic view of platform engagement.

Competition Statistics

The leaderboard page provides insights into overall platform activity:
  • KS3 Participants: Number of active students in Years 7-8
  • KS4 Participants: Number of active students in Years 9-11
  • KS5 Participants: Number of active students in Years 12-13
  • Total Points Awarded: Cumulative score across all students
  • Total Challenges: Number of challenges available on the platform

Leaderboard Features

Automatic Entry Creation

You don’t need to manually register for the leaderboard:
  • First time you complete a challenge, a leaderboard entry is automatically created
  • Your key stage is used to place you on the correct leaderboard
  • Entry persists across your entire time on the platform

Score Persistence

Your leaderboard scores:
  • Accumulate over time (never reset unless manually adjusted by administrators)
  • Survive across sessions - log out and back in without losing progress
  • Are tied to your user account and key stage
If administrators change your key stage, your leaderboard entries remain separate for each key stage you’ve participated in.

Fair Competition

Key Stage Separation

The platform ensures fair competition by:
  • Separating leaderboards by academic year groups
  • Only showing you challenges appropriate for your level
  • Preventing cross-key-stage comparison

Challenge Difficulty

Challenges are tagged by key stage:
  • KS3 students see KS3-appropriate problems
  • KS4 students see GCSE-level challenges
  • KS5 students see A-Level complexity problems
Your leaderboard ranking only reflects performance on challenges at your level.

Tips for Climbing the Leaderboard

Remember that partial solutions don’t earn points. Focus on finishing all parts of each challenge.
Check regularly for new challenges and attempt them early to have a chance at the 3-point first completion bonus.
With only 3 attempts per answer box, work carefully to maximize your completion rate.
Regular participation and completing multiple challenges is better than focusing on individual high scores.
