Overview

Sable provides comprehensive notification settings to help you stay informed without being overwhelmed. Control how and when you receive notifications for messages and events.

Desktop Notifications

Desktop notifications appear as system alerts when you receive messages.

Enabling Desktop Notifications

  1. Navigate to Settings > Notifications > System
  2. Click Enable if prompted to grant browser permission
  3. Toggle Desktop Notifications on
If you’ve previously denied notification permissions, you’ll need to allow them from your browser’s address bar settings.

Notification Behavior

When desktop notifications are enabled:
  • New message alerts appear as system notifications
  • Clicking a notification jumps directly to the message location (not the inbox)
  • Notifications respect your notification rules and keywords
If your browser doesn’t support notifications, you’ll see a message indicating this limitation.

Push Notifications

Sable supports push notifications through your Matrix homeserver.

Email Notifications

Receive notifications via email when messages arrive:
  1. Navigate to Settings > Notifications > System
  2. Find Email Notification
  3. Toggle on to enable
Email notifications require a verified email address on your account. If no email is attached, you’ll see a warning message.
Email notifications are sent using:
  • Brand name: “Sable”
  • Pusher type: m.email
  • Display name: Your email address

Sound Settings

Notification Sounds

Control whether Sable plays a sound when new messages arrive:
  1. Navigate to Settings > Notifications > System
  2. Toggle Notification Sound on or off
Notification sounds play regardless of desktop notification permission status.

Notification Rules

Sable provides granular control over which messages trigger notifications.

All Messages

Configure notifications for all messages in rooms:
  • All messages in all rooms - Get notified for every message
  • Room-specific settings - Customize per-room notification levels
  • Mute specific rooms - Silence notifications from selected rooms
Access via Settings > Notifications > All Messages.

Special Messages

Get notifications for specific types of messages:
  • Direct messages - Private 1-on-1 conversations
  • Mentions - When someone @mentions your username
  • Replies - When someone replies to your messages
  • Reactions - When someone reacts to your messages
Access via Settings > Notifications > Special Messages.

Keyword Notifications

Set up custom keywords that trigger notifications:
  1. Navigate to Settings > Notifications > Keyword Messages
  2. Add keywords or phrases
  3. Receive alerts when these words appear in any message
Use cases for keyword notifications:
  • Your name or nicknames
  • Project names you’re working on
  • Important topics or terms
  • Team or group identifiers
Example keywords:
  • “urgent”
  • “meeting”
  • Your real name
  • Project codenames

Notification Modes

Sable supports different notification modes to match your workflow:

Do Not Disturb

Temporarily silence all notifications:
  • Mutes both desktop and sound notifications
  • Visual indicators still show unread messages
  • Can be toggled quickly from settings

Notification Priorities

Matrix supports notification priorities:
  • Loud - Always notify with sound
  • Default - Follow your notification settings
  • Silent - Visual indicator only
  • Off - No notifications
These can be set per-room from room settings.

Privacy Considerations

Encrypted Room Previews

Notifications for encrypted rooms:
  • Show limited information for security
  • May display “New message” instead of content
  • Homeserver configuration dependent

Notification Content

What’s included in notifications:
  • Sender name
  • Room name
  • Message preview (for unencrypted rooms)
  • Timestamp
Be aware that email notifications may contain message content. Consider this when enabling email notifications for sensitive conversations.

Troubleshooting

Check these settings:
  1. Browser notification permission is granted
  2. Desktop Notifications toggle is enabled in Sable
  3. System Do Not Disturb mode is off
  4. Browser is allowed to show notifications in system settings
  5. Room notification level isn’t set to “Off”
Verify:
  1. Notification Sound toggle is enabled
  2. System volume is turned up
  3. Browser has permission to play audio
  4. No browser extensions are blocking audio
Common issues:
  1. No email address attached to account - Add one in your homeserver settings
  2. Email not verified - Check your inbox for verification email
  3. Homeserver doesn’t support email notifications
  4. Email pusher not properly configured
Try disabling and re-enabling email notifications to reset the pusher.

Migration Notes

The Block Users feature has moved from Notifications to the Account section as of recent versions. Find it now under Settings > Account > Block Users.
