Ubuntu does not come with Chinese language support pre-installed. Follow these steps to add it:

Install IBus Pinyin

sudo apt update
sudo apt install ibus-pinyin ibus-sunpinyin

Configure the input method

Open Language settings

Go to Settings > Region & Language and click Manage Installed Languages.

Ensure IBus is set as the input method system

Under the “Input Method” tab, verify that “Keyboard input method system” is set to ibus.

Install the Chinese language pack

Click “Install/Remove Languages” and check the box next to “Chinese (Simplified)” or “Chinese (Traditional)” as needed. Click Apply.

Add Chinese as an input source

Under “Input Sources”, click the + button. Select “Chinese (China)” and choose your desired input method (e.g., “Chinese (Intelligent Pinyin)”). Click Add.

You can also navigate to the “Input Method” tab, click “Add”, select “Chinese”, and then choose your desired input method (e.g., “Chinese - Pinyin”).

Apply the changes

Log out and log back in for the changes to take effect.
