Real-time collaboration features
When you collaborate on a note, you’ll experience:- Live updates: See changes from other users as they type
- Cursor position indicators: View where other collaborators are working
- Active user list: See who’s currently viewing or editing the note
- Automatic conflict resolution: Changes merge seamlessly without conflicts
Seeing who’s editing
When others are actively working on a note, you’ll see visual indicators:Active collaborators indicator
In the top-right corner of the note editor, you’ll find:- Colored avatars: Each active collaborator is represented by a circular avatar with their initials
- Avatar colors: Each user is assigned a unique color to help distinguish between collaborators
- Hover tooltips: Hover over an avatar to see the full name of the collaborator
Avatars only appear when multiple users are actively viewing or editing the note. If you’re alone, you’ll just see the save status.
User count display
Between the save status indicator and the avatar list, you’ll see:- A dot separator when multiple users are connected
- Only users who have the note open are shown (not just users with access)
Cursor position indicators
See exactly where your collaborators are working in the document:Colored cursors
Each collaborator’s cursor position is marked with a colored indicator that matches their avatar color. This helps you track who’s working where.
Name labels
When you hover near a collaborator’s cursor, you’ll see their name displayed, making it easy to identify who’s editing each section.
Live updates
Changes from collaborators appear instantly in your editor:How live updates work
- Instant synchronization: Changes from other users appear within milliseconds
- Seamless integration: New content flows into the document without disrupting your work
- Preserved cursor position: Your cursor stays in place even as others make changes elsewhere
- Real-time content updates: Text, formatting, and structural changes all sync live
What gets synchronized
- Text additions and deletions
- Formatting changes (bold, italic, headings, etc.)
- Lists and structured content
- Links and images
- Title changes
All collaborators must have Edit permission to make changes. Users with View permission can see live updates but cannot modify the note.
Conflict resolution
Noteverse automatically handles conflicts when multiple users edit simultaneously:Automatic merging
- Non-overlapping changes: Edits in different parts of the document merge automatically
- Last write wins: If two users edit the exact same text simultaneously, the most recent change takes precedence
- No manual intervention: You don’t need to manually resolve conflicts - the system handles it for you
Best practices for smooth collaboration
Watch cursor positions
Keep an eye on where others are working to avoid editing the same section simultaneously.
Communicate in comments
Use the comments feature to discuss changes or ask questions without editing the main content.
Work in different sections
When possible, divide the work so collaborators focus on different parts of the note.
Collaboration status indicators
Save status
You’ll always know the status of your work:- Saving…: Your changes are being sent to the server (shows a loading spinner)
- Saved: All changes have been successfully saved (shows a green badge)
The save status applies to everyone’s changes, not just yours. When you see “Saved,” it means all recent changes from all collaborators have been saved.
Connection status
The system maintains a real-time connection for collaboration:- Active connection enables live updates and cursor tracking
- If your connection drops, you’ll be automatically reconnected
- Your changes are queued and synced when the connection is restored
Working with view-only collaborators
Users with View permission can participate in limited ways:- They can see all live updates as they happen
- They can see other collaborators’ cursors and avatars
- They can add comments to discuss the content
- They cannot edit the title or content
- The editor will appear disabled for them
Owner information
Every note displays the owner’s information:- The owner’s username and email appear below the title
- If you’re the owner, you’ll see “You” next to your email
- Only the owner can change sharing settings and permissions
