Set Up Your Passkey

Click Set up passkey to create your passwordless authentication method.Your browser will prompt you to:
  • Use Touch ID, Face ID, or Windows Hello (biometric authentication)
  • Or use your device PIN as an alternative
Your passkey is stored securely on your device and cannot be accessed by Ave or anyone else. It uses WebAuthn technology built into modern browsers and operating systems.
When you see the authentication prompt, verify your identity using your preferred method. Ave will generate a master encryption key in your browser that never leaves your device.

To protect your account if you lose access to your passkey, Ave provides recovery methods.

Trust Codes

You’ll receive 2 trust codes in the format: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
Save these trust codes in a secure location immediately. You’ll need them if you lose access to your passkey.
  • Store them in a password manager
  • Write them down and keep them in a safe place
  • Never share them with anyone
Check the box confirming you’ve saved your trust codes, then click Continue.Trust codes encrypt a backup of your master encryption key, allowing you to recover your account on a new device.

What Happens Behind the Scenes

Ave uses end-to-end encryption (E2EE) to protect your data:
  1. Master Key Generation: A unique encryption key is generated in your browser using cryptographically secure random numbers
  2. Passkey Creation: Your device creates a passkey using WebAuthn that’s tied to your biometric or device PIN
  3. Trust Code Encryption: Your master key is encrypted with your trust codes so you can recover it later
  4. Secure Storage: Only encrypted data is sent to Ave’s servers - your master key never leaves your device in plaintext
Ave cannot access your master encryption key or decrypt your data. Only you have the keys to your encrypted information.

Handle Requirements

Your handle is your unique identifier on Ave:
  • Must be 3-32 characters long
  • Can only contain letters (a-z, A-Z), numbers (0-9), and underscores (_)
