The Pokémon Explorer features a comprehensive filter system that lets you narrow down the Pokédex using multiple criteria. Unlike the search bar which uses keywords, filters provide dropdown menus for precise selection.

Accessing Filters

The filter section is located directly below the search bar, containing six dropdown menus:
  • Type Filter - Filter by elemental type
  • Generation Filter - Filter by game generation (I-IX)
  • Color Filter - Filter by primary color
  • Habitat Filter - Filter by natural habitat
  • Size Filter - Filter by height category
  • Weight Filter - Filter by weight category
All filters work together! Select multiple filters to create very specific searches.

Type Filter

The type filter allows you to view Pokémon of a specific elemental type.
1

Click the Type Dropdown

Select the dropdown labeled “Elige el tipo” (Choose type)
2

Choose a Type

Select from 18 available types:
  • Normal, Fuego (Fire), Agua (Water), Eléctrico (Electric)
  • Planta (Grass), Hielo (Ice), Lucha (Fighting), Veneno (Poison)
  • Tierra (Ground), Volador (Flying), Psíquico (Psychic), Bicho (Bug)
  • Roca (Rock), Fantasma (Ghost), Dragón (Dragon), Siniestro (Dark)
  • Acero (Steel), Hada (Fairy)
3

View Results

The Pokédex automatically updates to show only Pokémon of the selected type
When you select a type for the first time, the app loads all Pokémon of that type from the PokeAPI. This may take a moment for types with many Pokémon.
Type Filter Features:
  • Common types appear first in the dropdown for convenience
  • Shows all Pokémon with the selected type (including dual-types)
  • Loads on-demand for better performance

Generation Filter

Filter Pokémon by the generation (game release era) they were introduced in. Available Generations:

Generation I

Pokémon #1-151 (Kanto region)

Generation II

Pokémon #152-251 (Johto region)

Generation III

Pokémon #252-386 (Hoenn region)

Generation IV

Pokémon #387-493 (Sinnoh region)

Generation V

Pokémon #494-649 (Unova region)

Generation VI

Pokémon #650-721 (Kalos region)

Generation VII

Pokémon #722-809 (Alola region)

Generation VIII

Pokémon #810-905 (Galar region)

Generation IX

Pokémon #906-1025 (Paldea region)
First-time players? Start with Generation I to see the original 151 Pokémon!
How It Works:
  • When you select a generation, the app loads all Pokémon within that ID range
  • The filter uses Pokédex numbers to determine generation membership
  • Loading a generation for the first time fetches data from the API

Color Filter

Find Pokémon based on their official color classification from the Pokémon games. Available Colors:
  • Negro (Black)
  • Azul (Blue)
  • Marrón (Brown)
  • Gris (Gray)
  • Verde (Green)
  • Rosa (Pink)
  • Morado (Purple)
  • Rojo (Red)
  • Blanco (White)
  • Amarillo (Yellow)
Color data comes from the Pokémon species data in the PokeAPI. Some Pokémon may not have color information available.
Example Use Cases:
  • Find all blue Water-type Pokémon
  • Discover rare purple Pokémon
  • Build a team based on color theme

Habitat Filter

Discover Pokémon by their natural habitat or environment. Available Habitats:
  • Cueva (Cave)
  • Bosque (Forest)
  • Pradera (Grassland)
  • Montaña (Mountain)
  • Raro (Rare)
  • Terreno Áspero (Rough Terrain)
  • Mar (Sea)
  • Urbano (Urban)
  • Orilla del Agua (Water’s Edge)
Rare habitat indicates Pokémon that don’t have a standard natural habitat, often legendary or mythical Pokémon.

Filter Behavior

  • First-time filter selections may load data from the API
  • Type and generation filters load larger datasets
  • Subsequent uses of the same filter are cached and instant
  • Color and habitat filters use pre-loaded species data
  • A “No results” message appears
  • The Pokémon grid will be empty
  • Try removing one or more filters to broaden your search

Clearing Filters

To reset all filters and view the complete Pokédex:
1

Method 1: Manual Reset

Set each dropdown back to its default option:
  • “Elige el tipo” for Type
  • “Todos los colores” for Color
  • Etc.
2

Method 2: Clear All Button

Click the “Clear Filters” button in the filters section to reset everything at once
The filter section remembers your selections as you browse through pages, making it easy to explore large result sets.

Performance Tips

  • Start broad, then narrow: Begin with one filter and add more to refine
  • Use generation filter wisely: Loading all 9 generations takes time; select specific ones
  • Combine size/weight with type: Creates interesting, focused result sets
  • Cache benefits: Once data is loaded, filter changes are instant
Filters persist while browsing paginated results, so you can explore all matching Pokémon across multiple pages.
