OpenComic offers multiple reading modes to match your content type and personal preferences. Each mode is optimized for different types of comics and reading styles.

Manga mode

Manga mode enables right-to-left reading order, which is standard for Japanese manga and some other Asian comics.

Key features

  • Right-to-left navigation - Pages advance from right to left
  • Reversed double page order - Right page appears before left page
  • Reversed UI elements - Navigation buttons and page indicators adapt to RTL
  • Smart page distribution - Automatically handles the blank first page
You can enable manga mode in the reading settings or use the keyboard shortcut to toggle it quickly while reading.

How it works

When manga mode is enabled:
  1. The reading direction reverses throughout the application
  2. Double page spreads show pages in the correct manga order
  3. Next/Previous buttons adapt their behavior
  4. The page slider reverses its direction

Webtoon mode

Webtoon mode is designed for vertical-scrolling comics, particularly Korean webtoons and modern web comics.

Features

  • Vertical scrolling - Smooth scrolling from top to bottom
  • Width adjustment - Content adjusts to optimal reading width
  • Continuous reading - Seamless page transitions
  • Touch-friendly - Optimized for touchscreen devices
  • Custom scroll speed - 70% screen height per page turn
Webtoon mode automatically enables scroll view and width adjustment for the best vertical reading experience.

Double page view

Double page view displays two pages side-by-side, mimicking the experience of reading a physical book.

Configuration options

  • Blank first page - Optionally add a blank page at the start to align spreads correctly
  • Horizontal page handling - Choose whether horizontal images span both pages or remain single
  • Aspect ratio detection - Automatically detects horizontal vs vertical pages
  • Blank page alignment - Smart insertion of blank pages to keep spreads aligned
Do not apply to horizontalsWhen enabled, horizontal (landscape) images display across the full width instead of being paired with another page.Align with next horizontalInserts blank pages before horizontal images to ensure proper alignment in double page mode.Invisible blank pagesHides blank placeholder pages while maintaining proper page alignment.Invisible first blank pageHides only the first blank page while keeping others visible.

How double page works

The application calculates page distribution based on:
  1. Page aspect ratios (width/height)
  2. Your horizontal image preferences
  3. Blank page configuration
  4. Reading direction (manga mode)
Pages are then distributed intelligently to create proper spreads.

View modes

OpenComic offers three distinct view modes for page navigation:

Slide view

Pages slide horizontally (or vertically in scroll mode) as you navigate.
  • Smooth transitions - Configurable animation speed
  • Transform-based - Uses CSS transforms for smooth 60fps animations
  • Memory efficient - Only renders visible pages plus buffer
  • Touch gestures - Swipe to navigate

Scroll view

All pages are laid out in a continuous scrolling view.
  • Continuous reading - No breaks between pages
  • Natural scrolling - Use mouse wheel, trackpad, or touch
  • Progress tracking - Automatically tracks your position
  • Smart page detection - Identifies current page based on viewport center
Scroll view works in both horizontal and vertical orientations, automatically adapting to your content and preferences.

Compact view

A fade transition between pages without sliding animations.
  • Instant page changes - No sliding animation
  • Fade transitions - Optional fade effects
  • Lower resource usage - Minimal GPU utilization
  • Keyboard navigation friendly - Quick page turns

View adjustments

Adjust to width

When enabled, pages scale to fit the full width of the reading area, with height determined by aspect ratio.

Adjust to height

The default mode scales pages to fit the full height, with width determined by aspect ratio.

Original size mode

Prevent images from being enlarged beyond their original dimensions:
  • Maintains image quality
  • Prevents pixelation on high-DPI displays
  • Scales down large images as needed
  • Centers smaller images

Margin and spacing

Customize the reading experience with adjustable margins:
  • Vertical margins - Space above and below pages
  • Horizontal margins - Space on left and right sides
  • Horizontal image margins - Special margins for landscape images
  • Independent controls - Configure each margin separately

Image clipping

Remove unwanted borders from comic pages:
  • Top/Bottom clipping - Remove horizontal borders
  • Left/Right clipping - Remove vertical borders
  • Percentage-based - Clip by percentage of image size
  • Preserves aspect ratio - Page layout adjusts automatically
Image clipping is particularly useful for scanned comics with white borders or margin artifacts.

Switching between modes

You can switch reading modes at any time:
  1. Your current page position is preserved
  2. Settings apply immediately
  3. Zoom level can optionally persist (global zoom)
  4. Reading progress continues tracking
Each mode can be customized independently, and settings are remembered for future reading sessions.
