This guide will help you get up and running with OpenComic quickly. Follow these steps to start reading your first comic or manga.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, make sure you have:
  • OpenComic installed on your system (see Installation if you haven’t installed it yet)
  • Some comic or manga files in a supported format (CBZ, CBR, CB7, PDF, etc.)

Getting started

Launch OpenComic and add your library

After installation, launch OpenComic. You’ll see the main browse window.To add your comics to the library, you can:
  • Add a master folder: Go to the menu (three lines icon) → SettingsMaster Folders → click Add folder and select the directory containing your comics
  • Drag and drop: Simply drag comic files or folders from your file explorer onto the OpenComic window
  • Open a single file: Use FileOpen (or press Ctrl+O / Cmd+O) to browse and open a specific comic
Master folders are scanned recursively, so OpenComic will find all comics in subdirectories automatically.

Open and start reading a comic

Once your library is set up:
  1. Browse your comics in the grid or list view
  2. Click on a comic’s cover to open it
  3. The reading view will open with the first page
Navigation basics:
  • Press Right Arrow or Left Arrow to move between pages
  • Press Space to go to the next page
  • Press Escape to return to the library
  • Use Q and E to zoom in and out
  • Press F11 for fullscreen mode
For manga (right-to-left reading), enable manga mode by pressing Ctrl+M or clicking the manga icon in the top bar.

Customize your reading experience

OpenComic offers many ways to customize how you read:Change reading mode:
  • Press Ctrl+M for manga (right-to-left) mode
  • Press Ctrl+W for webtoon (vertical scroll) mode
  • Press Ctrl+D for double page view
Adjust view settings:
  • Click the settings icon in the reading view
  • Switch between Slide, Scroll, and Compact views
  • Adjust image brightness, contrast, and saturation
  • Configure page margins and spacing
Set up bookmarks:
  • Press B on any page to create a bookmark
  • Access bookmarks from the sidebar (press S to toggle)
  • View all bookmarks for quick navigation

  • Magnifying glass: Press G to enable the floating magnifying glass for detailed viewing

Common reading scenarios

Reading manga

For manga (Japanese comics that read right-to-left):
  1. Enable manga mode: Press Ctrl+M or click the manga icon
  2. For double-page spreads: Press Ctrl+D to enable double page view
  3. Navigation automatically reverses: Left arrow goes forward, right arrow goes back

Reading webtoons

For webtoons (long vertical comics):
  1. Enable webtoon mode: Press Ctrl+W
  2. Scroll smoothly with mouse wheel or trackpad
  3. Use Page Down/Page Up for larger jumps
  4. Press Home to go to the top, End for the bottom

Reading on tablet or with touch

OpenComic supports touch and gesture controls:
  • Tap zones: Tap the left/right sides of the screen to navigate
  • Swipe: Swipe left/right to move between pages
  • Pinch: Pinch to zoom in and out
  • Configure tap zones: Go to Settings → Shortcuts → Tap zones to customize

Reading with a gamepad

Full gamepad support for comfortable couch reading:
  • A button: Next page
  • B button: Previous page
  • X button: Toggle sidebar
  • Y button: Zoom
  • D-pad: Navigate and zoom
  • Triggers: Quick page navigation

Essential features

Bookmarks

Save specific pages for quick reference:
  • Press B while reading to bookmark the current page
  • View all bookmarks in the sidebar (press S)
  • Click a bookmark thumbnail to jump directly to that page
  • Bookmarks are saved permanently until you remove them

Image adjustments

Fine-tune the appearance of pages:
  • Brightness: Make pages brighter or darker
  • Contrast: Increase or decrease contrast
  • Saturation: Adjust color intensity
  • Filters: Apply sepia, negative, or invert colors
  • Colorize: Add color to black and white manga
Access these in the reading menu → Image filters.

Magnifying glass

For detailed viewing of small text or artwork:
  1. Press G to enable the magnifying glass
  2. Move your mouse over the page to see a magnified view
  3. Adjust magnification level in settings
  4. Press G again to disable

Favorites and labels

Organize your comics collection:
  • Favorites: Click the heart icon to mark a comic as a favorite
  • Custom labels: Right-click a comic → Set labels → create or apply labels
  • Filter by labels: Use the filter menu to show only comics with specific labels

Advanced features

AI image enhancement

Improve image quality with AI tools:
  • Upscale: Enhance resolution with 2-4× upscaling
  • Descreen: Remove halftone patterns from scanned manga
  • Artifact removal: Clean up compression artifacts

Read comics from network locations:
  • SMB: Windows file shares
  • FTP/SFTP: File transfer protocol servers
  • S3: Amazon S3 and compatible services

Tips for the best experience

Performance

For the smoothest reading experience:
  • Use SSD storage for faster loading
  • Reduce preload pages if you have limited RAM (Settings → Reading)
  • Use nearest or linear interpolation for faster scaling (Settings → Image)
  • Clear the cache periodically if it grows large (Settings → General)

Reading preferences

Customize OpenComic to your preferences:
  • Theme: Choose from 19 material design color schemes (Settings → Theme)
  • Shortcuts: Customize all keyboard shortcuts (Settings → Shortcuts)
  • Tap zones: Configure touch/click zones (Settings → Shortcuts → Tap zones)
  • Reading profiles: Create preset configurations for different types of comics

Library organization

Keep your library organized:
  • Use master folders for main comic directories
  • Create labels for genres, series, publishers, reading status, etc.
  • Mark favorites for quick access
  • Use sorting options (by name, date, progress) to find comics quickly

Troubleshooting

Comics won’t open

If a comic fails to open:
  • Check that the file isn’t corrupted (try opening in another program)
  • For CBR files, ensure RAR support is available
  • For PDFs, check if the file is password-protected

Slow performance

If OpenComic is running slowly:
  • Reduce the number of preloaded pages
  • Use a faster interpolation method
  • Disable AI enhancements if enabled
  • Check if your system meets the requirements

Images look wrong

If images appear blurry, pixelated, or incorrectly colored:
  • Check the interpolation method (Settings → Image)
  • Reset image filters if adjustments were applied
  • Verify the source images are good quality
  • Try a different reading mode
