Overview

Open Screen provides a suite of visual effects to give your recordings a polished, professional appearance. All effects are applied in real-time during export with hardware acceleration support.

Background Wallpapers

Add aesthetic backgrounds to frame your recording instead of a plain color.

Using Wallpapers

  1. Open the Effects panel on the right side
  2. Browse through available wallpaper options
  3. Click a wallpaper to apply it instantly
  4. The video preview updates in real-time
Wallpapers are rendered behind your video content with automatic scaling and positioning to match your export resolution.

Wallpaper Library

Open Screen includes built-in gradient wallpapers:
  • Gradient backgrounds in various color schemes
  • Optimized for different aspect ratios
  • Located in the assets/wallpapers/ directory
  • Custom wallpapers can be added to the assets folder

Shadow Effects

Add depth to your video with customizable drop shadows.

Shadow Settings

1

Enable Shadow

Adjust the shadow intensity slider from 0 (no shadow) to 100 (maximum shadow).
2

Preview

The video preview shows the shadow effect in real-time.
3

Export

Shadows are rendered during export, adding a subtle depth effect around your video.
  • 0 - No shadow (disabled)
  • 1-30 - Subtle shadow for light backgrounds
  • 31-70 - Medium shadow (recommended)
  • 71-100 - Strong shadow for dramatic effect

Background Blur

Apply blur to the background wallpaper for a modern, focused look.

Blur Settings

  • Toggle - Enable/disable background blur
  • Effect - Applies a gaussian blur to the wallpaper behind your video
  • Use Case - Creates depth of field, making your video content stand out
Background blur only affects the wallpaper, not your video content. Your recording remains sharp and clear.

Motion Blur

Add cinematic motion blur to smooth fast movements.

How Motion Blur Works

  • Enable - Toggle motion blur in the effects panel
  • Rendering - Applied during export to frames with rapid movement
  • Performance - Uses GPU acceleration for efficient processing
Motion blur increases export time as it requires additional frame processing. Use it selectively for best results.

Border Radius

Round the corners of your video for a modern aesthetic.

Border Radius Settings

  • Range - 0 to 48 pixels
  • 0 - Sharp corners (default)
  • 8-16 - Subtle rounding
  • 24-48 - Pronounced rounded corners

Padding

Control the spacing between your video and the edges/background.

Padding Settings

  • Range - 0 to 200 pixels
  • 0 - Video fills the entire frame
  • 50 - Default, comfortable spacing
  • 100-200 - Large padding for background emphasis
Padding creates space around your video where the wallpaper or background color is visible. Combine with shadows for a floating video effect.

Combining Effects

Effects work together to create professional-looking videos:
  • Gradient wallpaper
  • Shadow intensity: 40
  • Background blur: On
  • Border radius: 16px
  • Padding: 60px

Real-Time Preview

All effects update in real-time in the editor:
  • Instant feedback - See effects as you adjust settings
  • Scrub through timeline - Effects visible during timeline scrubbing
  • Playback - Effects render during video playback
Preview quality is optimized for performance. Final export will render effects at full quality.

Performance Considerations

GPU Acceleration

Open Screen uses WebGL for effect rendering:
  • Hardware accelerated - Utilizes your GPU for fast rendering
  • Fallback support - Software rendering available if GPU unavailable
  • Optimized pipelines - Effects are rendered in efficient batches

Effect Complexity

EffectPerformance Impact
WallpaperLow
ShadowLow-Medium
Background BlurMedium
Border RadiusLow
PaddingMinimal
Motion BlurMedium-High
Enabling multiple high-impact effects may slow down export times, especially at 4K resolutions. Monitor export progress and adjust settings if needed.

Export Quality

Effects are rendered at full quality during export:
  • Shadows use high-quality gaussian blur
  • Wallpapers are scaled to match output resolution
  • Border radius is anti-aliased for smooth edges
  • All effects respect the selected export quality setting

Keyboard Shortcuts

No direct keyboard shortcuts for effects, but you can:
  • Use Tab to navigate between effect controls
  • Use Arrow keys to adjust slider values
  • Use Enter to confirm changes

Best Practices

Tutorials: Minimal effects, focus on content clarityMarketing videos: Use shadows, blur, and wallpapers for polishDemos: Subtle effects that don’t distract from the demonstration
Scale effect values (padding, border radius) based on your export resolution. What looks good at 720p may appear too small at 4K.
Always preview your full video with effects enabled before starting a long export to ensure the look matches your expectations.
