Timeline Mastery

The timeline is your command center for precise video editing.

Understanding the Timeline

Components:
  • Time axis - Displays time markers (adaptive based on video duration)
  • Playhead - Green vertical line showing current position
  • Row tracks - Separate rows for Zoom, Trim, Annotation, and Speed
  • Region items - Draggable, resizable editing regions
Timeline Zoom Levels:
  • Automatically adjusts interval markers (0.25s to 1 hour)
  • Zoom in: Ctrl/Cmd + Scroll (up)
  • Zoom out: Ctrl/Cmd + Scroll (down)
  • Pan: Shift + Ctrl/Cmd + Scroll
Zoom in for precise edits (frame-level accuracy), zoom out for overall view and long videos.

Playhead Navigation

Moving the Playhead:
  • Click anywhere on the timeline
  • Drag the playhead diamond handle
  • Use playback controls (play/pause, seek)
Playhead Snapping:
  • Automatically snaps to nearby keyframes (within 150ms)
  • Helpful for precise positioning
  • Snap to region start/end points
The playhead position determines where new regions are created when you press keyboard shortcuts.

Keyframe Markers

Keyframes mark important moments in your video:
  1. Position playhead at desired time
  2. Press F to add keyframe
  3. Keyframes appear as markers on timeline
  4. Click keyframe to select (turns blue)
  5. Press Delete or Ctrl/Cmd + D to remove
Keyframe Uses:
  • Mark section boundaries
  • Plan zoom/annotation positions
  • Quick navigation reference points
  • Align multiple edits
Keyframe Tips:
  • Playhead snaps to keyframes when dragging
  • Use keyframes before adding regions for precision
  • Remove keyframes after editing to declutter timeline

Zoom Region Techniques

Manual Zoom Placement

Auto-Suggest Zooms

Leverage cursor telemetry for intelligent zoom suggestions:
  1. Record a screencast with cursor movements
  2. Click the Wand Sparkles button in timeline
  3. Open Screen analyzes cursor dwell patterns
  4. Automatically creates zoom regions at cursor pause points
  5. Zoom focus centers on cursor position
How Auto-Suggest Works:
  • Analyzes cursor position over time
  • Detects “dwell moments” where cursor paused
  • Ranks candidates by dwell strength
  • Spaces suggestions 1.8 seconds apart
  • Avoids overlapping existing zooms
Auto-suggest is perfect for first-pass editing. Review and adjust suggested zooms for final polish.

Zoom Focus Control

Precise control over zoom center point: Setting Focus:
  1. Select zoom region on timeline
  2. Zoom preview appears on video
  3. Click and drag the focus point (crosshair)
  4. Position over the UI element to emphasize
  5. Focus is clamped to zoom boundaries
Focus Coordinates:
  • Normalized 0-1 range (center is 0.5, 0.5)
  • Automatically adjusts for zoom depth
  • Persisted in project files
Best Practices:
  • Center focus on buttons, text, or UI elements
  • Avoid edges (can show cropped areas)
  • Test at different zoom levels
  • Use playback preview to verify

Speed Region Techniques

Control playback speed for pacing:

Speed Options

Slow Motion:
  • 0.25× - Ultra slow (25% speed)
  • 0.5× - Half speed
  • 0.75× - Slightly slow
Fast Forward:
  • 1.25× - Slightly fast
  • 1.5× - 1.5× speed (recommended)
  • 1.75× - Fast
  • - Double speed

Strategic Speed Use

Speed Up (1.5× - 2×):
  • File uploads/downloads
  • Form filling
  • Navigation between sections
  • Repetitive actions
  • Loading screens (or trim them)
Slow Down (0.5× - 0.75×):
  • Critical interactions
  • Complex UI gestures
  • Important reveals
  • Detailed code changes
Speed regions cannot overlap each other or span across trim regions. Plan your speed changes carefully.

Speed Region Workflow

  1. Watch video at normal speed
  2. Identify sections to speed up/slow down
  3. Add keyframes at boundaries
  4. Press S at each section start
  5. Adjust region duration
  6. Select speed multiplier
  7. Preview result

Trim Region Mastery

Remove unwanted content:

Precision Trimming

Adding Trims:
  1. Position playhead at unwanted section start
  2. Press T to add trim region
  3. Drag edges to select content to remove
  4. Region turns red (indicates removal)
Trim Region Rules:
  • Cannot overlap other trims
  • Removed from final export
  • Original recording preserved
  • Can undo by deleting trim region

Multi-Trim Workflow

For videos with multiple cuts:
1

First pass: Mark all mistakes

  • Watch full video
  • Add keyframes at each mistake/pause
  • Don’t create trims yet
2

Second pass: Create trim regions

  • Navigate to first keyframe
  • Press T to create trim
  • Adjust edges precisely
  • Move to next keyframe
  • Repeat
3

Third pass: Verify continuity

  • Play video with trims
  • Check transitions are smooth
  • Adjust trim boundaries if needed
4

Clean up

  • Delete keyframes (no longer needed)
  • Final playback review
Leave small padding (100-200ms) between content and trim edges for smoother transitions.

Annotation Advanced Techniques

Overlapping Annotations

Multiple annotations at the same timestamp: Layer Order (Z-Index):
  • Annotations stack by creation order
  • Earlier = lower layer
  • Later = higher layer (on top)
Navigating Overlaps:

  • Press Tab to cycle forward through annotations
  • Press Shift + Tab to cycle backward
  • Selected annotation highlights in settings panel
Use Cases:
  • Title + subtitle text
  • Arrow + text label
  • Multiple callouts on same frame
  • Logo + watermark

Annotation Duration Timing

Short Annotations (1-2 seconds):
  • Quick callouts
  • Tooltips
  • Transient labels
Medium Annotations (3-5 seconds):
  • Explanatory text
  • Standard callouts
  • Most use cases
Long Annotations (5+ seconds):
  • Persistent labels
  • Watermarks
  • Section titles
  • Logos

Annotation Positioning

Drag to Position:
  • Click and drag annotation on video preview
  • Snap to edges (automatic)
  • Percentage-based (scales with export resolution)
Resize:
  • Drag corner handles
  • Maintains aspect ratio (shift + drag to ignore)
  • Width/height in percentage of video
Common Positions:
  • Top Center (50%, 10%) - Titles
  • Bottom Center (50%, 85%) - Subtitles
  • Top Right (85%, 10%) - Logos
  • Floating - Callouts near UI elements

  3. Add remaining annotations
  4. Apply same settings to each
  5. Adjust position and content

Multi-Version Exports

Create multiple versions from one project:
  1. Create master project with all edits
  2. Export version 1: Full quality MP4
  3. Adjust aspect ratio (e.g., 16:9 → 1:1)
  4. Export version 2: Social media
  5. Change to 9:16 for stories
  6. Export version 3: Vertical
  7. Save project to preserve all versions

Timeline Performance Tips

  • Use fewer zoom regions (under 20)
  • Limit annotations (under 30)
  • Close other applications
  • Export in segments if needed
  • Reduce padding temporarily (faster rendering)
  • Disable motion blur for preview
  • Zoom in timeline to reduce visible region count
  • Use Medium quality for drafts
  • GIF exports are faster for short clips
  • Close preview window during export
  • High quality exports take longer but use all CPU cores

Troubleshooting

Regions Won’t Place

Problem: “Cannot place zoom/trim/speed here” error Solutions:
