Vehicle and display compatibility

BlueBus is compatible with BMW vehicles using the I-Bus communication architecture. This page details which vehicles and display units are supported.

Supported vehicles

BlueBus works with BMW vehicles equipped with I-Bus systems. The following platforms are fully compatible:
PlatformModelProduction Years
E387 Series1994-2001
E395 Series1995-2004
E463 Series1997-2006
E52Z82000-2003
E53X51999-2006
E83X32003-2010
E85Z42003-2008
E86Z4 Coupe2005-2008
R50/R52/R53MINI Cooper2000-2006
These vehicles use the I-Bus communication protocol, which BlueBus uses to emulate a CD changer and integrate with factory systems.

How to verify I-Bus compatibility

Your BMW has I-Bus if it was manufactured during the years listed above for your specific model. The I-Bus system is identified by:
  • A round diagnostic port (20-pin) typically located under the hood
  • Factory equipment like navigation, multi-function steering wheel, or on-board computer
  • CD changer preparation wiring (even if no CD changer is installed)
If your vehicle has a CD changer installed, you’ll need to remove it as BlueBus emulates the CD changer on the I-Bus.

Supported display units

BlueBus provides different levels of functionality depending on your vehicle’s display unit. All display types are supported with appropriate feature sets.

BMBT (Board Monitor)

Full graphical navigation display The BMBT is the factory navigation screen with a full graphical interface. This display provides the richest BlueBus experience. Features:
  • Full graphical menus with icons and multiple lines of text
  • Complete metadata display (artist, title, album)
  • Access to all BlueBus settings and configuration options
  • On-Board Computer data display (temperatures, range)
  • Visual Park Distance Control integration
  • Bluetooth device management interface
The BMBT display offers the most comprehensive BlueBus experience with full menu navigation and visual feedback.

MID (Multi-Information Display)

24-character single-line display The MID is located in the instrument cluster and shows a single line of text with up to 24 characters. Features:
  • Track metadata display (scrolling for long text)
  • Basic playback information
  • Settings access through simplified menus
  • Temperature and vehicle data display
  • Phone call information and caller ID
Limitations:
  • Single line limits menu depth
  • Text scrolls for content longer than 24 characters

CD53 (Business CD Radio)

11-character single-line display The CD53 is a business radio with a small single-line display showing up to 11 characters. Features:
  • Abbreviated track information
  • Basic playback status
  • Limited settings access
  • Caller information during calls
Limitations:
  • Very limited screen space (11 characters)
  • Abbreviated menus and text
  • Best used with steering wheel controls for navigation

MIR (Multi-Information Radio)

Single-line radio display The MIR is similar to CD53 with a single-line display integrated into the radio unit. Features:
  • Track playback information
  • Basic metadata display
  • Call information
  • Essential settings access
Limitations:
  • Limited display space
  • Simplified menu structure
BlueBus automatically detects your display type and adapts the interface accordingly, ensuring optimal experience regardless of your equipment.

Additional compatibility notes

DSP (Digital Sound Processor)

BlueBus is fully compatible with factory DSP-equipped vehicles through both:
  • S/PDIF digital output for direct digital connection
  • Analog output for non-DSP or analog DSP input
You can configure the DSP input source through BlueBus settings. BlueBus integrates with factory navigation systems for:
  • GPS time synchronization
  • Navigation control (map zoom, silence mode)
  • Coordinate and location display
Navigation integration provides automatic time updates and allows BlueBus to display GPS data on compatible screens.

Multi-function steering wheel (MFL)

All supported vehicles with multi-function steering wheels can control BlueBus functions:
  • Next/previous track
  • Volume up/down
  • Voice assistant activation (Siri/Google Assistant)
  • Call answer/end

Telephone LED control

On vehicles equipped with a telephone button and LED:
  • Red LED = Bluetooth device disconnected
  • Green LED = Bluetooth device connected
  • LED behavior changes based on call status
