The BlueBus module physically installs in your vehicle’s trunk or cargo area, connecting to the I-Bus and CD changer connector.

Before you begin

Ensure you have the following items:
  • BlueBus module (v1 or v2)
  • CD changer connector harness (if not already present)
  • USB cable (for firmware updates)
  • Basic tools (screwdriver, trim removal tools)
Disconnect your vehicle’s battery before beginning the installation to prevent electrical damage or short circuits.

Installation location

The BlueBus module should be installed in the trunk or cargo area where the factory CD changer would normally be located. This location provides:
  • Access to the I-Bus connector
  • Access to the CD changer connector
  • Protection from the elements
  • Adequate ventilation for the module

Installation steps

1

Locate the CD changer connector

Find the CD changer connector in your trunk area. This is typically a 13-pin round connector that would normally connect to a BMW CD changer. The connector location varies by model:
  • E39/E38/E53: Usually in the trunk on the right side
  • E46: Behind the trunk liner on the right side
  • E83/E85/E86: In the rear cargo area
  • MINI (R50/R52/R53): Behind rear panel in cargo area
2

Connect the I-Bus harness

Connect the BlueBus module to the CD changer connector. This connector provides:
  • Power (12V and Ground)
  • I-Bus data connection for communication with vehicle modules
  • Audio outputs (Line-level and/or amplified outputs depending on your vehicle configuration)
3

Route the microphone cable

If using the hands-free telephony features, route the microphone cable from the BlueBus module to your desired microphone location. Common locations include:
  • Overhead console (recommended)
  • A-pillar
  • Sun visor area
The BlueBus uses your vehicle’s factory microphone if one is present. The microphone input is available on the CD changer connector.
4

Secure the module

Mount the BlueBus module in a secure location using:
  • Double-sided tape
  • Velcro strips
  • Mounting brackets (if available)
Ensure the module is:
  • Away from heat sources
  • Protected from moisture
  • Accessible for firmware updates via USB
5

Verify connections

Before reassembling trim panels:
  1. Verify all connectors are fully seated
  2. Check that cables are not pinched or stressed
  3. Ensure the module has adequate clearance
  4. Verify the USB port is accessible
6

Reconnect battery and test

Reconnect your vehicle’s battery and turn the ignition to position 1 (accessories). The BlueBus module should:
  • Power on (indicated by LED)
  • Announce itself on the I-Bus
  • Appear as a CD changer on your radio display
If the module does not appear, check your wiring connections and refer to the troubleshooting guide.

Hardware versions

BlueBus is available in two hardware versions:

Version 1

  • Original design with BC127 Bluetooth module option
  • Separate telephone mute control (pin RB7)
  • S/PDIF reset shared with telephone mute (pin RE2)

Version 2

  • Updated design with BM83 Bluetooth 5.0 module
  • Improved telephone control (pins RF4 and RF5)
  • Separate S/PDIF reset control
  • Enhanced power management
The hardware version is automatically detected by the firmware. You can verify your version by checking the board version status pin (PG8).

LED indicators

The BlueBus module includes an on-board LED that indicates system status:
  • Solid green: Module powered and running
  • Blinking: Bluetooth pairing mode
  • Off: No power or system error

Next steps

After completing the physical installation:
  1. Verify the wiring connections
  2. Configure your display unit
  3. Pair your Bluetooth devices
  4. Configure audio and telephony settings
