SmartTube supports global voice search through an additional bridge app. This allows the system’s voice search to open SmartTube instead of the official YouTube app.
Voice search requires installing a separate bridge app alongside SmartTube. The bridge app intercepts system attempts to open the official YouTube app.

Requirements and Limitations

Before setting up voice search, understand these requirements:

Bridge App Required

An additional app must be installed to intercept voice search requests and redirect them to SmartTube.

YouTube App Removal

The official YouTube app must be uninstalled for voice search to work with SmartTube.

Device-Specific Apps

Different bridge apps are needed for Fire TV vs Chromecast vs other Android devices.

Voice Command Format

On some devices, you must explicitly say “YouTube” in your search (e.g., “YouTube cute cats”).
You must uninstall the original YouTube app for the bridge to work. You can always reinstall it later if you change your mind.

Installation by Device Type

  1. Go to Fire TV Settings
  2. Navigate to ApplicationsManage Installed Applications
  3. Find YouTube
  4. Select Uninstall

  3. Allow installation from unknown sources if prompted
  4. Wait for installation to complete
The bridge app will not show up in your launcher - it runs invisibly in the background.
4

Test Voice Search

Test the voice search functionality:
  1. Press the voice button on your Fire TV remote
  2. Say a search query (e.g., “cute cats” or “YouTube cute cats”)
  3. SmartTube should open with search results
  4. If it opens the wrong app, ensure YouTube is fully uninstalled

Chromecast with Google TV

Chromecast with Google TV devices also do not require root for voice search.

Remove the official YouTube app:
  1. On Chromecast, go to Settings
  2. Navigate to AppsSee all apps
  3. Find YouTube
  4. Select Uninstall (or Disable if uninstall isn’t available)

4

Test Voice Search

Verify voice search is working:
  1. Press the Google Assistant button on your remote
  2. Say a search query (try “YouTube cute cats”)
  3. SmartTube should open with the search results
  4. Some queries may require saying “YouTube” explicitly
On Chromecast with Google TV, you may need to explicitly say “YouTube” in your voice search (e.g., “YouTube cute cats” instead of just “cute cats”).

Other Android TV Devices (Root Required)

For all other Android TV devices (excluding Fire TV and Chromecast), root access is required.
Root access required! This is significantly more complex and requires technical expertise. Proceed only if you’re comfortable with rooting.
1

Root Your Device

Root your Android TV device:
  1. Search for a rooting guide specific to your device model
  2. Follow the guide carefully (varies by manufacturer)
  3. Verify root access is working
  4. Install root management apps (like Magisk or SuperSU)
Rooting voids warranties and can brick your device if done incorrectly. Proceed at your own risk!
2

Uninstall YouTube with Root

Use ADB with root to uninstall the system YouTube app:
adb shell
su
pm uninstall com.google.android.youtube.tv
Alternative: Use a root app like Titanium Backup or System App Remover
Root is required because the YouTube app is usually a system app that cannot be uninstalled normally.
3

Download ATV Bridge App

Download the Android TV Bridge SmartTube app:Bridge App URL: https://kutt.it/stn_bridge_atvUse Downloader by AFTVnews or transfer the APK manually.
4

Install Bridge App

  1. Open the downloaded APK file
  2. Allow installation from unknown sources
  3. Complete the installation process
  4. The bridge app will run invisibly in the background
5

Test Voice Search

Test the voice search functionality:
  1. Use your remote’s voice search button
  2. Say a search query
  3. SmartTube should open with results
  4. May require saying “YouTube” in the query

Bridge App Types

Two different bridge apps are available depending on your device:
For Amazon Fire TV devices onlyDownload URL: https://kutt.it/stn_bridge_amazonCompatible with:
  • Fire TV Stick (all generations)
  • Fire TV Cube
  • Fire TV Edition TVs
Not compatible with:
  • Chromecast with Google TV
  • Other Android TV devices
The Amazon bridge is specifically designed for Fire TV’s unique system architecture.

Understanding Bridge Functionality

The bridge app acts as an interceptor:
  1. System voice search attempts to open YouTube
  2. Bridge app intercepts the system intent
  3. Redirects to SmartTube instead of YouTube
  4. SmartTube opens with the search query
Why it’s invisible:
  • The bridge app has no user interface
  • It only runs when the system tries to open YouTube
  • Cannot be launched directly
  • Doesn’t appear in app drawer or launcher
The bridge app will not show up in your launcher because it’s not meant to be opened directly - it only intercepts system requests.
The official YouTube app must be uninstalled because:
  • Android prioritizes system apps over user apps
  • If YouTube is present, the system opens it directly
  • The bridge can only intercept if YouTube is absent
  • This is an Android OS limitation, not a SmartTube limitation
Can I keep both? No, voice search will not work if both apps are installed. However:
  • You can manually open either app at any time
  • Only voice search functionality requires removing YouTube
  • You can reinstall YouTube if you change your mind
Solutions:
  1. Verify YouTube is uninstalled: Check your app list thoroughly
  2. Check system apps: YouTube might be hidden in system apps
  3. Restart device: Reboot your TV after installing the bridge
  4. Reinstall bridge: Uninstall and reinstall the bridge app
  5. Clear defaults: Clear default app associations in Android settings
Diagnosis steps:
  1. Check bridge installation: Verify the bridge app installed correctly
  2. Correct bridge type: Use Amazon bridge for Fire TV, ATV bridge for others
  3. SmartTube installed: Ensure SmartTube itself is properly installed
  4. Microphone working: Test if microphone works in other apps
  5. Voice search enabled: Check if voice search is enabled in TV settings
This is normal on some devices! On certain Android TV devices, you must explicitly say “YouTube” when searching:Say: “YouTube cute cats”
Don’t say: “cute cats” (may not work)
Why this happens:
  • Different devices handle voice search differently
  • Some require app context keywords
  • This is device-dependent, not a SmartTube issue
If voice search isn’t working, try adding “YouTube” to the beginning of your query.
Known issue on Android 11:Some reports indicate the latest update for “Google app for Android TV” could cause this bug.Solution:
  1. Go to Android TV Settings
  2. Navigate to AppsSee all apps
  3. Find Google app
  4. Select Uninstall updates
  5. Restart your device
This should restore voice search functionality.

Voice Search Performance

Voice search and casting performance in SmartTube may be inferior to official apps, depending on your device. This is a limitation of being a third-party app.

Accuracy

Voice recognition accuracy depends on your TV’s microphone and Google’s voice processing, not SmartTube.

Speed

Search may be slightly slower than the official app due to the bridge redirection process.

Supported Languages

Language support depends on your device’s Google Assistant configuration.

Complex Queries

Simple searches work best - complex queries may not be interpreted correctly.
