Overview

The General Configuration category provides scripts to enable or disable core Windows features and system behaviors. These settings allow you to customize system functionality based on your needs and preferences.

AI Features

Control Windows AI-powered features.

Microsoft Copilot

Enable or disable the Microsoft Copilot AI assistant.
  • Disable Microsoft Copilot (default) - Removes Copilot from the system
  • Enable Microsoft Copilot - Enables the Copilot AI assistant
AtlasOS disables Copilot by default to reduce resource usage and privacy concerns.

Recall

Manage the Windows Recall feature (AI-powered activity history).
  • Disable Recall Support (default) - Disables Recall functionality
  • Enable Recall Support - Enables Recall for activity tracking
Recall captures screenshots of your activity and may have privacy implications. Only enable if you understand and accept the privacy trade-offs.

Automatic Updates

Control Windows automatic update behavior.
  • Disable Automatic Updates (default) - Prevents Windows from automatically downloading and installing updates
  • Enable Automatic Updates - Allows Windows to automatically update
AtlasOS disables automatic updates by default so you have full control. You can still manually install updates through Windows Update settings.

Background Apps

Manage whether apps can run in the background.
  • Disable Background Apps (default) - Prevents apps from running in the background
  • Enable Background Apps - Allows apps to run background processes
Impact: Disabling background apps can improve performance and battery life but may prevent some app functionality like notifications.

CPU Idle

Control the CPU idle state for power management.
  • Enable Idle (default) - Allows CPU to enter idle states for power saving
  • Disable Idle - Prevents CPU idle states for potentially lower latency

Desktop Context Menu

Add quick toggle for CPU idle directly to the desktop:
  • Remove Idle Toggle in Desktop Context Menu (default) - No context menu entry
  • Add Idle Toggle in Desktop Context Menu - Adds right-click desktop option
Disabling CPU idle may increase power consumption and temperatures but can reduce latency in some scenarios. Most users should keep idle enabled.

Delivery Optimization

Control peer-to-peer Windows Update delivery.
  • Disable Delivery Optimization (default) - Updates only download from Microsoft servers
  • Enable Delivery Optimization - Enables P2P update sharing

FSO and Game Bar

Manage Full Screen Optimizations and Xbox Game Bar.
  • Enable FSO and Game Bar Support (default) - Enables gaming features
  • Disable FSO and Game Bar Support - Removes gaming overlay features

File Sharing

Configure Windows file and network sharing capabilities.
  • Disable File Sharing (default) - Disables SMB file sharing
  • Enable File Sharing - Enables network file sharing

Give Access To Menu

Control the “Give access to” context menu option:
  • Disable Give Access To Menu (default) - Removes context menu entry
  • Enable Give Access To Menu - Shows sharing options in context menu

Network Navigation Pane

Manage network locations in File Explorer:
  • Disable Network Navigation Pane (default) - Hides network section
  • User Network Navigation Pane choice - Lets Windows decide

Hibernation

Control hibernation functionality.
  • Disable Hibernation (default) - Removes hibernation and deletes hiberfil.sys
  • Enable Hibernation - Enables hibernation mode
Disabling hibernation can free up several gigabytes of disk space by removing hiberfil.sys. Only enable if you need hibernation on laptops.

Location

Manage Windows location services.
  • Disable Location (default) - Disables location tracking
  • Enable Location - Enables location services for apps
Control Phone Link and mobile device integration.
  • Disable Mobile Device Settings (default) - Removes Phone Link functionality
  • Enable Mobile Device Settings - Enables phone integration features

Power-saving

Configure system power-saving features.
  • Default Power-saving (default) - Standard power management
  • Disable Power-saving - Disables power-saving features for maximum performance
Disabling power-saving will increase power consumption and heat generation. Only recommended for desktop systems.

Search Indexing

Control Windows Search indexing behavior.
  • Minimal Search Indexing (default) - Indexes only essential locations
  • Enable Search Indexing - Full indexing of all configured locations
  • Disable Search Indexing - Completely disables the search indexer
Performance impact: Full indexing can slow down older systems but speeds up file searches.

Sleep

Manage system sleep functionality.
  • Enable Sleep (default) - Allows system to enter sleep mode
  • Disable Sleep - Prevents automatic sleep

Sleep Study

Control sleep study diagnostic feature.
  • Disable Sleep Study (default) - Disables sleep diagnostics
  • Enable Sleep Study - Enables sleep tracking for battery diagnostics
Sleep Study is primarily useful for laptop users troubleshooting battery drain during sleep.

Store App Archiving

Manage automatic archiving of Microsoft Store apps.
  • Disable Store App Archiving (default) - Prevents automatic app archiving
  • Enable Store App Archiving - Allows Windows to archive unused Store apps

System Restore

Control System Restore functionality.
  • Enable System Restore (default) - Enables restore point creation
  • Disable System Restore - Disables System Restore and frees disk space
Disabling System Restore removes an important recovery option. Keep it enabled unless you have alternative backup solutions.

Timer Resolution

Control high-resolution timer behavior.
  • Disable timer resolution (default) - Standard timer resolution (15.6ms)
  • Enable timer resolution - Forces high-resolution timer (1ms)
High-resolution timers can improve frame pacing in games but may increase power consumption. Most modern games set timer resolution automatically.

Update Notifications

Manage Windows Update notification behavior.
  • Enable Update Notifications (default) - Shows update notifications
  • Disable Update Notifications - Hides update notifications

Web Search (includes Search Highlights)

Control web search integration in Start menu search.
  • Disable Web Search (default) - Search only shows local results
  • Enable Web Search - Includes web results and search highlights

Widgets (News and Interests)

Manage the Windows widgets panel.
  • Disable Widgets (default) - Removes widgets panel
  • Enable Widgets - Enables news and interests widget panel

Windows Spotlight

Control Windows Spotlight feature for lock screen backgrounds.
  • Disable Windows Spotlight (default) - Uses static wallpaper
  • Enable Windows Spotlight - Downloads and shows featured images

Windows Updates

Advanced Windows Update management.
  • Toggle Windows Updates - Enable or disable Windows Update service
  • Set Windows Update Deferral - Configure update delay periods
  • Reset Windows Update Deferral - Remove deferral configuration
Use deferrals to delay feature updates while still receiving security updates.

Workplace

Manage enterprise workplace features.
  • Disable Workplace - Removes workplace integration features
  • Enable Workplace - Enables enterprise workplace features
