AtlasOS is an open and lightweight modification to Windows, designed to optimize performance, privacy and security. It makes your computer snappier and more private with lots of usability improvements.

Core Feature Categories

AtlasOS transforms Windows through four key areas of improvement:

Performance

Optimize system resources by removing unnecessary background processes, telemetry, and optionally disabling power-saving features

Privacy

Eliminate Microsoft’s tracking, pre-installed apps, and bloatware to make Windows truly private

Security

Configurable security features including toggleable Defender, mitigations, and remote assistance controls

Usability

Remove Windows advertising and fix general annoyances for a more enjoyable experience

What Makes AtlasOS Different?

AtlasOS is built on the principle of giving you control over your Windows installation. Unlike stock Windows, Atlas:
  • Removes bloatware - Pre-installed apps and unnecessary features are removed
  • Disables telemetry - Microsoft’s data collection is eliminated
  • Optimizes performance - Background processes and services are minimized
  • Enhances privacy - Tracking and advertising features are disabled
  • Improves usability - Annoying Windows behaviors are fixed
  • Maintains compatibility - All tweaks are reversible and documented

Installation Options

During AtlasOS installation, you can customize your experience:
Choose to enable (recommended) or disable Windows Defender. Disabling reduces security and is for advanced users only. Defender can be toggled later in the Atlas folder.
Keep default Windows mitigations (recommended) or disable them for potential performance gains on older CPUs. Disabling reduces security and could harm performance on modern CPUs.
Choose whether to enable or disable automatic Windows Updates. You’ll receive update notifications regardless of your choice.
Options to disable hibernation, enable maximum performance mode, or disable Core Isolation for additional performance.
Choose to remove Microsoft Edge and optionally install an alternative browser (Brave, LibreWolf, Firefox, or Chrome).

Configuration Management

All AtlasOS features are managed through YAML configuration files located in the playbook structure:

├── privacy/ # Privacy improvements
├── security/ # Security configurations
├── qol/ # Quality of life improvements
├── debloat/ # Bloatware removal
├── networking/ # Network optimizations
└── misc/ # Miscellaneous tweaks
Each tweak is documented with a title, description, and specific registry or system actions taken.
