Understanding Tags

Tags help you organize and categorize your bookmarks, making it easier to find related content. Each bookmark can have multiple tags, and you can filter your entire collection by specific tags.
Tags are stored as lowercase strings and must be unique per bookmark. You cannot add the same tag twice to a single bookmark.

Adding Tags

You can add tags to any bookmark manually through an intuitive inline editing interface.
1

Enter edit mode

Click on the tag area of any bookmark. If the bookmark has no tags yet, you’ll see placeholder text saying “add tags…”.
2

Type your tags

Start typing a tag name. Tags are automatically converted to lowercase. To add a tag, press:
  • Enter key
  • Comma (,) key
The tag will be added immediately and you can continue adding more tags.
3

Save your tags

Click the checkmark icon to save all tags to the bookmark.
Think of tags as folders or categories. Use consistent naming conventions like “work”, “personal”, “design”, or “development” to keep your collection organized.

Editing and Removing Tags

Removing Individual Tags

When in edit mode, each tag displays an “X” icon:
  1. Click on the tag area to enter edit mode
  2. Click the X icon next to any tag to remove it
  3. Click the checkmark to save your changes

Using Backspace to Edit

You can use the keyboard for efficient tag editing:
  1. Click into the tag input field
  2. Press Backspace when the input is empty
  3. The last tag will be removed and placed back in the input field for editing
  4. Modify the tag text or press Backspace again to delete it completely
Clicking outside the tag area while in edit mode will cancel your changes and restore the original tags.

Tag-Based Filtering

Filter your entire bookmark collection to show only bookmarks with specific tags.
When you select a tag filter, only bookmarks containing that tag will be displayed in your collection. This makes it easy to focus on specific categories or topics. The tag filter works independently from other filters like time period and search, allowing you to combine multiple filtering methods.
Tag filtering is integrated with the bookmark store and persists while you navigate through your collection. Select “all” to clear the tag filter and show all bookmarks.

Best Practices for Tagging

Create a Consistent System

Develop a tagging strategy that works for you:
  • By Topic: design, development, marketing, research
  • By Project: project-alpha, client-work, side-project
  • By Priority: important, read-later, reference
  • By Content Type: article, tool, documentation, tutorial

Keep Tags Simple

  • Use single words or short phrases
  • Avoid special characters (they work, but keep it simple)
  • Be consistent with plural vs singular (choose one)
  • Use lowercase (the system does this automatically)

Don’t Over-Tag

Adding too many tags to a single bookmark can make organization confusing. Aim for 2-5 relevant tags per bookmark.

Reuse Existing Tags

Before creating a new tag, check if a similar one already exists. Reusing tags helps maintain a clean, organized system and makes filtering more effective.
The AI tag generation feature (see AI Tag Generation) analyzes your existing tags and suggests relevant ones, helping maintain consistency.

Tag Management Tips

Review and Clean Up

Periodically review your tags to:
  • Merge similar tags (e.g., dev and development)
  • Remove unused or redundant tags
  • Standardize naming conventions

Use the Command Menu

The command menu search (press ⌘K or Ctrl+K) searches through tags as well as titles and URLs. This makes it easy to find bookmarks even if you can’t remember the exact title. Learn more in Search & Filters.
