Popcorn Vision’s rating system lets you rate movies and TV shows on a 10-point scale. Your ratings sync with TMDB and contribute to the community database.
You need a TMDB account to rate content. Learn how to create an account.

Understanding the Rating Scale

Popcorn Vision uses a 10-point rating scale (0.5 to 10 stars):

1-3 Stars

Poor to Below AverageNot recommended, significant issues

4-6 Stars

Average to GoodDecent but flawed, somewhat enjoyable

7-8 Stars

GreatHighly enjoyable, well-made, recommended

9-10 Stars

ExceptionalOutstanding, must-watch, near-perfect

Half-Star Ratings

The rating system uses half-star increments:
  • ⭐ 0.5 = half star
  • ⭐ 1.0 = one star
  • ⭐ 1.5 = one and a half stars
  • … up to 10 stars
This gives you 20 different rating options (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0… up to 10.0) for precise ratings.

How Ratings Work

Your Rating vs. Community Rating

Popcorn Vision displays two types of ratings:

Your Personal Rating

  • Yellow stars (⭐)
  • Shows your opinion
  • Only visible to you
  • Syncs with TMDB
  • Appears in your “Rated” section

Community Average

  • Usually displayed as a number (e.g., 7.8/10)
  • Average of all TMDB user ratings
  • Publicly visible
  • Updates as more people rate
  • Includes your rating in the average

Contributing to TMDB

When you rate content in Popcorn Vision:
  1. Your rating is saved to your TMDB account
  2. It contributes to the community average rating on TMDB
  3. It helps others discover quality content
  4. It’s synced across TMDB-powered applications
Your individual rating is private, but it contributes anonymously to the public average rating that everyone sees.

Rating TV Show Seasons and Episodes

Beyond rating the entire TV show, you can rate individual seasons and episodes:
Rate the overall TV series from its main detail page:
  • Reflects your opinion of the show as a whole
  • Appears in your profile’s rated section
  • Contributes to the show’s overall rating
You can rate the show, all seasons, AND all episodes separately - they’re independent ratings.

Syncing with TMDB

Your ratings automatically sync with TMDB:

From Popcorn Vision to TMDB

Best Practices for Rating

Rate content only after you’ve watched it completely:✅ Finish the movie or show first
✅ Let your opinion settle (wait a day if needed)
✅ Consider the entire experience
❌ Don’t rate based on trailers
❌ Don’t rate if you haven’t finished it
❌ Don’t rate based on others’ opinions
Don’t cluster all ratings around 7-8:
  • Use 1-3 for content you disliked
  • Use 4-6 for average content
  • Use 7-8 for content you enjoyed
  • Save 9-10 for truly exceptional content
A diverse rating scale is more useful for you and others.
Rate based on your genuine opinion:
  • Don’t inflate ratings for fan favorites
  • Don’t tank ratings for popular content you dislike
  • Your honest rating helps the community
  • It also helps you remember what you truly thought
Your opinion may change over time:
  • Revisit old ratings occasionally
  • Update if your opinion has changed
  • Consider rewatching before changing
Consider keeping separate notes about WHY you gave certain ratings:
  • The rating number is just a summary
  • Notes help you remember details
  • Useful for recommendations to friends

Understanding Rating Statistics

When viewing content, you’ll see various rating statistics:

Average Rating

  • Scale: 0-10
  • Source: Average of all TMDB user ratings
  • Display: Often shown as a number (e.g., 7.8) with star icon

Vote Count

  • What it is: Number of users who rated the content
  • Why it matters: High vote counts = more reliable average
  • Display: Usually shown as “1.2K votes” or similar
A movie with 8.5 rating from 10,000 votes is more reliably “great” than one with 8.5 from 100 votes.

Privacy & Visibility

  • Your individual ratings are visible on your TMDB profile (based on TMDB privacy settings)
  • They contribute anonymously to community averages
  • In Popcorn Vision, only you see your personal ratings in your profile
Rating privacy is controlled by your TMDB account settings:
  1. Go to TMDB.org
  2. Visit your account settings
  3. Adjust privacy preferences
  4. Changes apply across TMDB-powered apps
Your ratings contribute to community averages anonymously, but your TMDB profile shows your rating history according to your TMDB privacy settings.

Troubleshooting

If your rating isn’t saved:
  1. Make sure you’re logged in
  2. Check your internet connection
  3. Wait for the loading spinner to complete
  4. Refresh and try again
  5. Try rating from the detail page instead of quick actions
If your rating doesn’t appear:
  1. Refresh the page
  2. Log out and log back in
  3. Verify you’re using the correct account
  4. Check if the rating shows on TMDB.org
If you can’t delete a rating:
  1. Look for the trash icon next to the stars
  2. Make sure you clicked the icon, not the stars
  3. Wait for loading to complete
  4. Refresh and try again from the detail page
If your Popcorn Vision rating doesn’t appear on TMDB:
  1. Give it a few minutes
  2. Refresh TMDB.org
  3. Clear browser cache
  4. Log out and back in on both platforms
  5. Verify the rating saved in Popcorn Vision (check your profile)
