Overview

Submitting your mate to the 200 Mates project is a simple process that allows you to share your mate-drinking experience with the global community. Your submission will appear on the interactive globe after review by our volunteer moderation team.
All submissions are reviewed before appearing on the map to ensure content is safe, respectful, and appropriate for the community.

Required Fields

The submission form includes several required and optional fields:

Name

Your name or pseudonym (required). You can participate anonymously by using any name you prefer.

Country

Your country location (required). Can be auto-detected via GPS or entered manually.

Yerba Brand

The brand of yerba mate you’re using (required). Share your favorite brand with the community.

Photo

A photo of your mate (required). Maximum file size: 5MB. Accepts JPG and PNG formats.

Optional Fields

Choose your favorite preparation style:
  • Amargo (Bitter) - Traditional bitter mate
  • Dulce (Sweet) - Sweetened with sugar or honey
  • Tereré - Cold mate, popular in Paraguay and Brazil
  • Mate Cocido (Brewed Mate Tea) - Prepared as a tea
The type of mate vessel you use (optional):
  • Calabaza (Calabash/Gourd)
  • Madera (Wood)
  • Acero (Stainless Steel)
  • Vidrio (Glass)
  • Or any other material

GPS Location Detection

The form automatically attempts to detect your location using GPS to place your mate accurately on the globe.

GPS Request

When you load the form, the system requests access to your device’s location.Status message: ”📍 Solicitando ubicación…” (Requesting your location…)

Location Detection

If you grant permission, your coordinates are detected automatically.Status message: ”📍 Detectando ubicación…” (Detecting your location…)

Automatic Country Fill

Your country field is automatically populated based on your GPS coordinates.

Manual Country Entry

If GPS is not available or you deny location access, you can manually enter your country:
Status messages when GPS is unavailable:
  • “GPS no disponible — ingresá tu país manualmente”
  • “Sin GPS — ingresá tu país manualmente”
The system will use your country’s capital coordinates as the map marker location.

Photo Upload

The photo upload system supports multiple methods:

Upload Methods

Drag and Drop

Drag your photo file directly onto the upload area. The area will highlight when you hover with a file.

Click to Browse

Click the upload area to open your device’s file picker and select a photo.

Photo Preview

After selecting a photo:
  1. A preview of your image appears immediately in the upload area
  2. The placeholder text is hidden
  3. You can change the photo by uploading a new one
Photo Requirements:
  • Formats: JPG, PNG
  • Maximum size: 5MB
  • Should show your mate and setup

Form Validation

Before submission, the form validates that:
  • Name field is filled
  • Country field is filled
  • Yerba brand field is filled
  • A photo has been uploaded
If any required field is missing, you’ll see an alert: “Por favor completá los campos obligatorios y adjuntá una foto”

Submission Process

Complete the Form

Fill in all required fields and optional information about your mate.

Upload Photo

Add a photo of your mate using drag-and-drop or file browser.

Submit

Click the “Enviar” (Submit) button. A loading indicator appears during upload.

Globe Animation

If GPS coordinates are available, the globe zooms to your location briefly before returning to the overview.The animation sequence:
  • Zooms to your location (altitude: 0.8) over 1.5 seconds
  • Pauses for 4 seconds
  • Returns to overview position (altitude: 2.5) over 1.5 seconds

Success Modal

A success modal appears confirming your submission:“¡Mate enviado!”“Tu mate está en revisión. Una vez aprobado, aparecerá en el mapa.”

Form Reset

The form automatically resets, ready for another submission.

After Submission

Your mate submission enters a review queue:

Moderation Review

A small group of volunteers reviews all submissions to ensure they meet community guidelines. This process may take some time depending on submission volume.

Approval & Display

Once approved, your mate appears on the globe with a 🧉 marker at your location. It also appears in the recent mates gallery.

Troubleshooting

If GPS detection fails:
  1. Check that you’ve granted location permissions to your browser
  2. Manually enter your country name
  3. The system will place your mate at your country’s capital coordinates
If photo upload fails:
  • Ensure your file is under 5MB
  • Use JPG or PNG format
  • Check your internet connection
  • Try a different photo
If you see an error message after submitting:
  • Check all required fields are filled
  • Verify your internet connection
  • Try submitting again
  • Contact support if the problem persists

Privacy Considerations

Location Privacy:
  • Your exact GPS coordinates are stored but only displayed as general map markers
  • If you prefer not to share precise location, deny GPS access and enter your country manually
  • The system will use capital city coordinates instead
Photo Guidelines:
  • Avoid photos with clearly visible faces
  • Don’t include personal information (phone numbers, addresses)
  • Focus on your mate and setup
  • Review the moderation guidelines before submitting
