Setting Language Preferences

Filter which languages appear in your audiobook lists:
1

Open Settings

From the home screen, tap the Settings icon (gear icon in the top-right corner).
2

Access language preferences

Tap Visible languages in the settings list. This shows your currently selected languages as chips.
3

Select languages

A dialog opens with all available languages. Check or uncheck languages:
  • Check a language to include it in your results
  • Uncheck a language to hide it from your results
You can select as many languages as you want.
4

Save preferences

Tap the Save button at the bottom of the dialog.
5

Changes apply

A confirmation message appears: “Language filter saved. Lists will update on next fetch.” Your selected languages are now active.
Language filters apply to all audiobook lists including Popular All Time, Trending This Week, genre browsing, and search results.

Understanding Language Filtering

No Languages Selected

If you don’t select any languages (none are checked):
  • All audiobooks appear regardless of language
  • The settings page shows: “All languages (no filter)”
  • This is useful if you’re multilingual or exploring new languages

One or More Languages Selected

When you select specific languages:
  • Only audiobooks in those languages appear in lists and search results
  • The settings page shows chips for each selected language
  • Audiobooks tagged with “Multiple / Multilingual” may still appear
If you’re learning a new language, try adding it to your visible languages to discover audiobooks for language practice.

When Changes Take Effect

Language preference changes apply:
  • Immediately for new searches
  • On next refresh for curated sections (Popular, Trending, Recommended)
  • After reopening genre lists or search results
1

Save language preferences

After saving in settings, you’ll see a confirmation message.
2

Return to home screen

Navigate back to the home screen or any browsing page.
3

Refresh content

Lists will automatically filter based on your new preferences the next time they load data from the server.

Viewing Current Language Settings

Check which languages are currently active:
  1. Go to Settings
  2. Look at the Visible languages row
  3. You’ll see:
    • Chips for each selected language (e.g., “English”, “Español”)
    • “All languages (no filter)” if nothing is selected

Use Cases for Language Filtering

If you only understand one language, select just that language to avoid seeing audiobooks you can’t understand. For example, select only “English” for an English-only collection.
Select all languages you can understand. For example, a Spanish-English bilingual user might select both “English” and “Español” to see content in both languages.
Add a language you’re learning to discover audiobooks for practice. Start with simpler content like children’s stories in your target language.
Scholars and students can filter for Ancient Greek and Latin to find classical texts and literature.
Temporarily add new languages to discover content you might not usually browse. Remove them later if needed.

Language Tags and Metadata

How Aradia determines audiobook language:
  • Each audiobook in the LibriVox collection has language metadata from Archive.org
  • The app uses these ISO language codes (en, es, fr, etc.) to filter content
  • Some audiobooks are tagged as “Multiple / Multilingual” when they contain content in several languages
Language tags are set by LibriVox volunteers who create the audiobooks. Occasionally, an audiobook might be miscategorized.

Resetting Language Preferences

To show all languages again:
1

Open language settings

Go to Settings > Visible languages.
2

Uncheck all languages

Tap each checked language to uncheck it.
3

Save

Tap Save with no languages selected.
4

All languages visible

The app now shows audiobooks in all available languages.
If you’re not finding audiobooks you expect to see, check your language settings. You might have accidentally filtered out the language you’re looking for.

Initial Language Selection

When you first install Aradia:
  1. The recommendation screen appears on first launch
  2. This screen helps you select favorite genres (minimum 3 required)
  3. Language preferences default to “all languages” until you configure them in settings
You can change language preferences at any time without affecting your genre recommendations or favorites.
