The focus timer is designed for time-based tracking of your actual study hours. It’s not a Pomodoro timer—it’s a simple session tracker that logs how long you genuinely work on each subject.

Starting a study session

1

Navigate to the timer

Click the Timer button in the navigation bar to open the timer view.
2

Select your focus subject

Choose the subject you’re about to study from the pill buttons above the timer display (Physics, Chemistry, Maths/Biology, or custom subjects).
3

Start the timer

Click the Play button to start tracking time. The timer begins counting in HH:MM:SS format.
4

Pause if needed

Click the timer button again (now showing Pause) to pause the session. Your accumulated time is preserved.
5

Stop and log the session

When you finish studying, click the Stop button (square icon). This saves the session to your study logs.

Timer display

The timer shows:
  • Large digital countdown in 00:00:00 format
  • Subject pills for quick subject switching
  • Play/Pause button (center)
  • Stop button (right)
When the timer is running, an animated ring appears around the timer display and rotates slowly to indicate active tracking.

Study streak system

Your study streak is displayed in the top-right stats card with a flame icon. The streak counts consecutive days where you’ve logged at least one study session. How streaks work:
  • Study today → streak continues
  • Miss today but studied yesterday → streak maintained (1-day grace period)
  • Miss two consecutive days → streak resets to 0
The streak counter uses your logical day setting (see Settings for day rollover hour).
Maintaining streaks: The most important factor for exam prep is consistency. Even a 30-minute session is better than breaking your streak. Use the streak counter as motivation to show up every single day.

Study statistics

Two key metrics are displayed:
  • Streak: Total consecutive days (orange flame icon)
  • Today: Total minutes/hours studied today (purple clock icon)
These update in real-time as you log sessions. Below the timer, you’ll find a weekly bar chart showing your daily study hours for the current week (Mon-Sun). Chart features:
  • Each bar represents one day’s total study time in hours
  • Navigate between weeks using the chevron buttons
  • The chart label shows “This Week” or a specific date range
  • Hover over bars (desktop) to see exact hour values
The chart helps you identify patterns:
  • Which days you study most/least
  • Weekly hour totals
  • Trends across multiple weeks

Manual log entry

Sometimes you forget to start the timer or study offline. Use manual logging to add sessions retroactively.
1

Open manual log modal

Click + Manual Log next to “Today’s Sessions” heading.
2

Enter session details

  • Select subject from dropdown
  • Enter duration in minutes
  • Add optional notes (e.g., “Library session - rotational mechanics”)
3

Save the log

Click Add Log. The session appears in your session history immediately.

Session history

The “Today’s Sessions” section lists all study logs for the current logical day, sorted by most recent first. Each session card shows:
  • Duration badge (e.g., “45m”)
  • Subject name
  • Timestamp and optional notes
  • Delete button (trash icon)
You can delete any session by clicking the trash icon if logged by mistake.
Minimum session length: If you stop the timer before 1 minute, ChaosPrep prompts you to confirm discarding the session. This prevents accidental button clicks from cluttering your logs.

Timer behavior when tab is inactive

The timer continues running even when you close the tab or browser. The accumulated time is calculated based on the start timestamp, so you won’t lose any tracked time. When you return to the tab, the display catches up to the actual elapsed time instantly.
