BD2 Mod Manager offers several configuration options to customize how it manages your mods and integrates with Brown Dust 2.

Game settings

Game directory

The location where Brown Dust 2 is installed on your computer. What it does: Points the Mod Manager to your game installation so it can sync mods to the correct location. How to set it:
  1. Navigate to the configuration or settings page
  2. Click “Browse” or “Select Directory” for the game directory setting
  3. Navigate to the folder containing BrownDust II.exe
  4. Select the folder
Example path: F:\Neowiz\Browndust2\Browndust2_10000001
BD2 Mod Manager can automatically detect your game directory by checking the Windows registry. If automatic detection works, the game directory will be pre-filled.
The selected directory must contain BrownDust II.exe. If the executable is not found, you’ll receive an error and cannot sync mods.

Mods directory (staging directory)

The folder where you store mods before they’re synced to the game. What it does: This is your mod library - a separate location from the game where you add, remove, and organize mods. BD2 Mod Manager reads mods from this location and syncs enabled ones to the game. When to change it:
  • You want to store mods on a different drive (for space reasons)
  • You’re organizing your mod collection in a specific location
  • You’re switching between multiple mod libraries
This is not the BrownDustX mods directory inside your game folder. BD2 Mod Manager uses a separate staging directory and automatically syncs to the BrownDustX folder when you click “Sync”.

Sync settings

Sync method

Choose how mods are synchronized from your staging directory to the game. Available options:
  • Copy (default)
  • Symlink

Copy mode

Copies all enabled mods from the staging directory to the game’s BrownDustX mods folder. Advantages:
  • No administrator rights required
  • Works on all systems
  • Drag and drop functionality available
Disadvantages:
  • Slower sync times (especially with many large mods)
  • Uses more disk space (mods exist in both staging and game directories)
When to use: Use copy mode if you don’t have administrator access or if you prefer simplicity over performance. Creates symbolic links (shortcuts) instead of copying files. Advantages:
  • Much faster sync times
  • Saves disk space (mods only exist in staging directory)
  • Ideal for large mod collections
Disadvantages:
  • Requires administrator rights to run BD2 Mod Manager
  • Drag and drop is disabled (Windows security restrictions)
When to use: Use symlink mode if you have many mods, want faster sync times, or need to save disk space.
With 359 mods, symlink mode is significantly faster than copy mode. The performance difference increases with the number and size of mods.

Search settings

Controls whether BD2 Mod Manager searches for mods in nested subfolders. Default: Disabled (searches only one level deep) What it does:
  • Disabled: Only searches immediate subfolders (e.g., mods/ModName/)
  • Enabled: Searches all nested subdirectories (e.g., mods/Characters/Summer/ModName/)
When to enable:
  • You organize mods in nested folder structures (by character, type, creator, etc.)
  • You want to keep mods organized in categories
When to disable:
  • You have a simple, flat folder structure
  • The app is slow when loading mods (recursive search with many folders can cause performance issues)
Enabling recursive search can slow down mod loading if you have many nested folders or a large number of files. Only enable it if you need nested folder support.

Include mod relative path

Controls how mod names are displayed in the Mod Manager interface. What it does:
  • Disabled: Shows only the mod folder name (e.g., Lathel_Summer)
  • Enabled: Shows the full path relative to the staging directory (e.g., Characters/Lathel/Lathel_Summer)
When to enable: Enable this if you use recursive search and organize mods in folders - it helps you identify which subfolder each mod is in.

Interface settings

Language

Select the language for the BD2 Mod Manager interface. Available languages:
  • English (en-US) - default
  • Portuguese (pt-BR)
  • Japanese (ja-JP)
  • Korean (ko-KR)
  • Chinese (zh-CN)
Default behavior: BD2 Mod Manager attempts to detect your system language and use it automatically. If your system language is not supported, it defaults to English.

Theme

Choose the visual theme for the Mod Manager interface. Available themes:
  • Dark (default)
  • Light (if available)

Update settings

Notify on app update

Controls whether you receive notifications when a new version of BD2 Mod Manager is available. Default: Enabled What it does: Checks for new releases on GitHub and notifies you when updates are available. When to disable: Disable if you want to manage updates manually or don’t want update notifications.

Auto-download game data

Controls whether BD2 Mod Manager automatically downloads new character and asset data. Default: Enabled What it does: When Brown Dust 2 adds new characters or updates character assets, BD2 Mod Manager automatically downloads the updated data to keep character information current. When to disable: Disable if you want to control when game data updates occur or have limited bandwidth.

Auto-update mod preview

Controls whether the mod preview feature automatically updates. Default: Enabled What it does: Automatically updates the Spine animation preview functionality when new versions are available.

Advanced settings

Spine viewer enabled

Controls whether the built-in Spine animation preview is available. Default: Enabled What it does: Allows you to preview character animations directly in BD2 Mod Manager before enabling mods. When to disable: Disable if you don’t use the preview feature or want to reduce resource usage.

Troubleshooting configuration issues

Game directory not detected

If automatic detection doesn’t work:
  1. Manually browse to your game installation folder
  2. Ensure you select the folder containing BrownDust II.exe
  3. The path usually looks like: [Drive]:\Neowiz\Browndust2\Browndust2_[numbers]
To use symlink mode:
  1. Close BD2 Mod Manager
  2. Right-click the BD2 Mod Manager executable
  3. Select “Run as administrator”
  4. Symlink mode will now be available

BrownDustX not detected

BD2 Mod Manager requires BrownDustX to be installed:
  1. Install BrownDustX (the mod loader for Brown Dust 2)
  2. Ensure it’s installed in the correct game directory path: [Game]\BepInEx\plugins\BrownDustX\
  3. Restart BD2 Mod Manager

Recursive search is slow

If recursive search causes performance issues:
  1. Disable recursive search in settings
  2. Reorganize mods into a flatter structure (fewer nested folders)
  3. Remove empty folders from your staging directory

Saving settings

All configuration changes are saved automatically. Settings are stored in an INI file in the application directory and persist between sessions.
