  • Dedicated creator channels

  • Update notifications for existing mods

Mod types

Understanding the different types of mods helps you find what you’re looking for:

Character mods

Cutscene mods: Replace character animations in story cutscenes and special scenes. These typically have the largest file sizes due to the complexity of cutscene animations. Idle mods: Replace character animations in the character lobby, menu screens, and idle states. Dating mods: Replace character animations in dating events and interactions. NPC mods: Replace background character or NPC animations.

Other mods

Depending on what mod creators develop, you may also find UI modifications, sound replacements, and other types of game modifications.

Mod naming conventions

Mods typically follow naming patterns to help you identify their content:
  • Character names: Mods are usually named after the character they modify
  • Mod type: May include “cutscene”, “idle”, “dating”, or other descriptors
  • Creator name: Many creators include their username in the mod name
  • Version or variant: Some mods have multiple versions or costume variants
Examples:
  • Lathel_Summer_Cutscene
  • Justia_Idle_v2
  • Neamhain_Dating_Casual
Keep mods organized by character or type using folders in your staging directory. Enable recursive search in the configuration to let BD2 Mod Manager find mods in nested folders.

What to look for when downloading

Required files

Every valid Brown Dust 2 mod must contain:
  • A .modfile file (required for BrownDustX to recognize the mod)
  • Animation or asset files (typically .skel, .atlas, and .png files for Spine animations)
If a download doesn’t include a .modfile, it’s not a complete mod and won’t work with BD2 Mod Manager or BrownDustX.

File formats

Mods are typically distributed in compressed archives:
  • .zip files (most common)
  • .7z files (smaller file size)
  • .rar files (less common)
BD2 Mod Manager can automatically extract these formats. See the Adding mods guide for details.

Mod quality indicators

When evaluating mods: Preview images or videos: Reputable creators typically provide previews so you can see the mod before downloading. Creator reputation: Look for creators with multiple releases and positive community feedback. Update history: Mods that receive updates show active maintenance and bug fixes. File size: Character mods vary in size, but extremely small files may be incomplete. Clear documentation: Quality mods include information about what they modify, which character/costume they affect, and any known issues.

Compatibility considerations

Game version

Mods are typically compatible across game versions unless there are major changes to character assets. However:
  • Older mods may need updates for new character costumes
  • Game updates might require BrownDustX updates
BD2 Mod Manager includes auto-update game data functionality to keep character information current when new characters are added to Brown Dust 2.

Mod conflicts

Some mods may conflict if they modify the same character animation:
  • Multiple cutscene mods for the same character costume
  • Overlapping idle animation replacements
BD2 Mod Manager doesn’t prevent conflicts, so you need to manage which mods you enable. Use profiles to test different combinations.

Staying updated

Following mod creators

In the Discord community:
  • Follow creator announcement channels
  • Enable notifications for your favorite creators
  • Check for mod updates regularly

Community announcements

The BrownDustX Discord posts:
  • New mod releases
  • BrownDustX updates
  • Tool updates (including BD2 Mod Manager)
  • Important compatibility notices
Enable notify on app update in BD2 Mod Manager settings to get notified when new versions of the Mod Manager are available.

Requesting mods

If you’re looking for a specific mod:
  • Check the Discord search function first to see if it already exists
  • Post in appropriate request channels (if available)
  • Be respectful when requesting - mod creation takes significant time and effort
  • Consider commissioning creators who accept requests

Creating your own mods

Interested in making your own mods? The BrownDustX Discord community provides:
  • Modding guides and tutorials

Safety and ethics

Download safety

  • Download mods only from trusted sources (primarily the BrownDustX Discord)
  • Be cautious of mods from unknown websites or unverified sources
  • Scan downloaded files with antivirus software if you’re unsure

Respecting creators

  • Credit mod creators when sharing or showcasing mods
  • Don’t redistribute mods without permission
  • Support creators who accept donations if you enjoy their work
  • Respect takedown requests if a creator removes their mods

Game terms of service

Modding may violate Brown Dust 2’s terms of service. Use mods at your own risk:
  • Visual mods don’t provide gameplay advantages
  • Use mods responsibly and only for personal enjoyment
  • Don’t use mods to harass or negatively affect other players
