Question Types

The exam includes two types of questions:

Multiple-Choice Questions

These questions have one correct answer from four options. Example:
Which AWS service provides object storage?A. Amazon EBS

Multiple-Response Questions

These questions require you to select two or more correct answers from five or more options. The question will always specify how many answers to select. Example:

C. Benefit from massive economies of scale ✓
D. Limited global reach
E. Manual capacity planning
For multiple-response questions, you must select the exact number of correct answers specified. Partial credit is not awarded.

Exam Domains and Weighting

Questions are distributed across four domains:

Domain 3 (Technology and Services) has the most questions, so ensure you’re comfortable identifying AWS services and their use cases.

Scored vs. Unscored Questions

Of the 65 total questions:
  • 50 questions are scored and count toward your final result
  • 15 questions are unscored (used for future exam development)
You won’t know which questions are unscored, so treat every question as if it counts toward your score.
Unscored questions are included for statistical analysis and potential use in future exam versions. They appear identical to scored questions.

Time Management Tips

  1. Don’t get stuck on difficult questions - flag them and move on
  2. Read carefully but efficiently - eliminate obviously wrong answers first
  3. Leave 10-15 minutes for review at the end
  4. Answer every question - there’s no penalty for wrong answers
  5. Use the flag feature to mark questions for review

Testing Center (Pearson VUE)

Online Proctored (Pearson VUE OnVUE)

  • Take the exam from home or office
  • Requires webcam, microphone, and stable internet connection
  • Room must be private and free of distractions
  • System check required before exam
  • Live proctor monitors you via webcam throughout

During the Exam

For online proctored exams, the proctor can see your screen and you via webcam. They may pause your exam if they observe any policy violations.

After the Exam

Immediate Results

  • Pass/Fail status: Displayed on screen immediately
  • Preliminary report: Available in your AWS Certification account within 5 business days
  • Detailed score report: Shows performance by domain
  • Digital badge: Issued within 5 business days after passing

Score Interpretation

Scores range from 100-1000, with a minimum passing score of 700.

AWS uses scaled scoring to account for variations in exam difficulty. A score of 700 represents the same level of competence across different exam versions.

If You Don’t Pass

  • 14-day waiting period before you can retake the exam
  • Review your score report to identify weak domains
  • Focus additional study on areas where you scored lowest
  • Use this app’s Domain Mastery Tests to practice specific topics
  • No limit on number of retake attempts (but each attempt costs $100)

Certification Validity

The AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner certification is valid for 3 years from the date you pass the exam.

Recertification Options

  1. Retake the Cloud Practitioner exam before expiration
  2. Pass a higher-level AWS certification (Associate or Professional level)
  3. Earn 40 continuing education credits through AWS training and events
Passing any Associate-level AWS certification (Solutions Architect, Developer, or SysOps Administrator) automatically recertifies your Cloud Practitioner credential.
