How to Use the Timer

1

Start a Focus Session

Click the play button to begin a focus session. The timer will count down from your configured focus duration (default: 25 minutes).
2

Take a Break

When your focus session completes, you’ll receive a notification and the timer will automatically switch to break mode. If auto-start is enabled, the break will begin automatically.
3

Return to Focus

After your break completes, the timer switches back to focus mode, ready for your next productive session.

Timer Controls

Start/Pause

Click the play button to start the timer, or pause it at any time. When paused, the remaining time is preserved so you can resume exactly where you left off.

Reset

Reset the timer to return to the initial focus session duration. This also clears your current session progress but preserves your daily statistics.

Skip Stage

Jump between focus and break modes without waiting for the current stage to complete. Perfect for when you need flexibility in your workflow.

Timer Settings

Access timer settings to customize your Pomodoro experience:
Configure custom durations for both focus sessions and breaks:
  • Focus Duration: Set how long each focus session lasts (in seconds)
  • Break Duration: Set how long each break lasts (in seconds)
Changes to durations are applied immediately if the timer is stopped, or will take effect on the next session if the timer is running.
Enable or disable desktop notifications that alert you when:
  • A focus session completes: “Focus session complete! 🎯 - Great work! Time for a break.”
  • A break ends: “Break time is over! ☕ - Ready to focus again?”
Make sure to grant notification permissions in your browser for notifications to work.
Toggle sound effects that play when focus sessions or breaks complete. The default sound is a gentle chime that provides an audible cue without being disruptive.
When enabled, the timer automatically manages ambient soundscapes:
  • Soundscapes pause when you pause the timer
  • Soundscapes resume when you start a session
  • Integrates with your soundscape preferences
This creates a seamless audio environment that matches your work rhythm.
When enabled, breaks (and subsequent focus sessions) start automatically after the previous stage completes. This creates a continuous flow without requiring manual intervention.Disable this if you prefer manual control over when breaks and focus sessions begin.

Daily Statistics

The timer tracks your productivity throughout the day:
  • Focus Time: Total seconds spent in focus mode (automatically synced to your account)
  • Break Time: Total seconds spent in break mode
Statistics automatically reset at midnight each day, giving you a fresh start and clear daily metrics.
Focus time is synced to the cloud every 5 minutes (300 seconds) to preserve your progress even if you close your browser.

Stage Completion Behavior

When a timer stage completes:
  1. Completion tracking: The completed duration is saved to your local database
  2. Sound notification: A completion sound plays (if enabled)
  3. Desktop notification: A notification appears (if enabled)
  4. Stage transition: The timer automatically switches to the next stage (focus → break or break → focus)
  5. Auto-start: If enabled, the next stage begins immediately

Tips and Best Practices

Find Your Rhythm

The default 25-minute focus / 5-minute break ratio works well for most people, but experiment to find what works best for you. Some people prefer longer 50-minute sessions, while others work better with shorter 15-minute sprints.

Use Soundscapes

Enable soundscape integration to create an immersive environment. Ambient sounds help signal your brain when it’s time to focus and when it’s time to rest.

Honor Your Breaks

Breaks are essential for maintaining focus. Use them to step away from your screen, stretch, or get a drink. Resist the temptation to skip breaks.

Track Your Progress

Check your daily statistics to understand your productivity patterns. This helps you identify your most productive times of day.

Browser Extension Support

The timer works seamlessly across both the web app and browser extension, with state synchronized between platforms. Your timer will continue running even if you close the tab (when using the extension).
Daily statistics reset at midnight in your local timezone. Make sure to check your stats before the end of the day if you want to track your progress.
