Global Progress System

Study Sync uses a global progress model that tracks completion at the user-resource level:
How It Works: When you mark a resource as complete, that completion is recorded globally for your user account. This means if you mark a YouTube video complete in one instance, it appears complete in all instances that include that video.

Progress Metrics

Resource Completion

Track which learning materials you’ve finished: How to Mark Complete:
  • Click “Mark Complete” button while viewing a resource
  • Completion persists immediately across all instances
  • Visual indicators show completed resources (green checkmark)
Completion Data:
  • Completed status (true/false)
  • Completion timestamp (when you marked it complete)
  • Last accessed timestamp (most recent view)

Instance-Level Progress

Each instance calculates its own progress metrics:

Resource Progress

Completed Resources / Total Resources
  • Counts how many resources are complete
  • Displays as ratio (e.g., “12/20”)
  • Shown as percentage (e.g., “60%”)
  • Updates in real-time as you mark items complete

Time Progress

Completed Time / Total Time
  • Sums duration of completed resources
  • Compares to total instance duration
  • Percentage may differ from resource percentage
  • Useful for time-based planning
Example: 
Instance: "CS101 Midterm Prep"
Total Resources: 20 videos
Completed Resources: 12 videos
Resource Progress: 60%

Total Time: 500 minutes
Completed Time: 350 minutes
Time Progress: 70%
Time progress can differ from resource progress because resources have different durations. Completing a few long videos may give you more time progress than resource progress.

Remaining Time

Always know how much content is left:
  • Calculation: Total Time - Completed Time
  • Display: Formatted as hours and minutes (e.g., “2h 30m”)
  • Updates: Automatically recalculates when you mark items complete
  • Planning: Helps you pace learning to meet deadlines

Study Sync uses color-coded progress bars throughout the interface: Instance Dashboard:
  • Resource Progress Bar: Blue gradient showing completion percentage
  • Time Progress Bar: Purple gradient showing time percentage
  • Both bars animate smoothly as progress updates
Instance Header:
  • Full-width progress bar at top of instance page
  • Blue-to-purple gradient visualization
  • Updates in real-time as you mark resources complete

  • Green Checkmark: Resource is complete
  • Empty Circle: Resource is incomplete
  • Yellow Note: Resource has notes attached
  • Play Icon: Currently selected/playing resource

Resource Notes

Take notes on individual resources: Features:
  • Per-resource note field
  • Auto-save as you type
  • Synced across all devices
  • Accessible from any instance containing that resource
Note Persistence:
  • Notes survive resource completion
  • Available even if you remove resource from instance
  • Yellow sticky note icon indicates notes exist
Use Cases:
  • Summarize key concepts
  • Record timestamps of important moments
  • Note questions for further research
  • Create flashcard-style study aids
