If a player has no year-by-year data available, you’ll see “No year-by-year data” message.

Hot and Cold Zones

For pitchers, hot/cold zones show performance in different areas of the strike zone.

How to Read Zone Data

  • Hot zones - Areas where the pitcher performs well
  • Cold zones - Areas where hitters have success
  • Data is visualized on a strike zone grid
  • Different colors indicate performance levels
Zone data appears in the pitching section and helps identify pitcher strengths and weaknesses.

Stat Groups and Types

When viewing statistics, you’ll encounter different groupings:

Stat Groups

  • hitting - Offensive statistics (batting, base running)
  • pitching - Pitching performance metrics
  • fielding - Defensive statistics

Stat Types

Different time periods and contexts:
  • season - Single season statistics
  • seasonAdvanced - Advanced single-season metrics
  • careerRegularSeason - Career totals for regular season
  • careerAdvanced - Advanced career metrics
  • projected - Statistical projections
  • byDateRange - Stats for specific date ranges
  • vsTeam - Performance against specific opponents

Understanding Stat Displays

Counting Stats vs. Rate Stats

  • Counting stats increase over time (home runs, hits, strikeouts)
  • Rate stats measure efficiency (batting average, ERA, WHIP)

Better vs. Worse Values

Some stats are better when higher:
  • Batting average, home runs, RBI
  • Strikeouts (for pitchers), wins
  • Slugging percentage, on-base percentage
Some stats are better when lower:
  • ERA (earned run average)
  • WHIP (walks and hits per inning pitched)
Not all players have complete statistics for all years. Missing data may indicate:
  • Player didn’t play that season
  • Data not available from MLB API
  • Player was in minors or other leagues

Using Stats for Analysis

Compare Across Seasons

Use year-by-year data to:
  • Track career progression
  • Identify peak performance years
  • Spot trends and patterns
  • Understand career arcs

Compare Across Players

Use the comparison tool (see Comparing Players) to:
  • Evaluate multiple players for same stats
  • Compare performance in specific seasons
  • Analyze matchups and head-to-head data

Combine with Game Data

Cross-reference stats with:
  • Team performance
  • Schedule and opponent data
  • Season context and dates

No Stats Available?

If you see “No year-by-year data” or empty stat sections:
  1. Check if the player is recently added to MLB
  2. Try switching between hitting and pitching views
  3. Verify the player has MLB regular season experience
  4. Some inactive players may have limited historical data
