Overview

The checklist command generates a complete, step-by-step guide to file your calculated return at freefilefillableforms.com (the IRS Free File Fillable Forms). It shows exactly which fields to fill and what values to enter, line by line.

Syntax

/ezfile:checklist
This command has no arguments. It reads your calculated return from ./returns/return-2025.json and generates personalized filing instructions.

Prerequisites

You must have a calculated return. If no return data exists:
No return data found. Run `/ezfile:file-taxes <path-to-w2>` to calculate your return first.

What It Does

  1. Gathers required items - Lists everything you need before starting
  2. Walks through account creation - Shows how to set up your Free File Fillable Forms account
  3. Provides line-by-line instructions - Tells you exactly what to enter in each field using YOUR numbers
  4. Handles schedules - If you need Schedule 1 or Schedule 1-A, shows how to add and fill them
  5. Reviews and submits - Final checks before e-filing
  6. After-filing checklist - What to do after you file
  7. State return guidance - State-specific filing instructions based on your W-2

EZFile is a tax calculation assistant, not a licensed tax preparer or tax advisor. It does not file your taxes — you must file yourself at freefilefillableforms.com or another IRS-approved method. Part 1: Before You Start

BEFORE YOU START — Gather These Items

  [ ] Your Social Security Number (you'll need the full number to file)
  [ ] Your date of birth
  [ ] Your current mailing address
  [ ] Last year's AGI (from your 2024 tax return, needed for identity verification)
      → If you didn't file last year, you'll need your prior year Self-Select PIN
      → If this is your first time filing, enter $0
  [ ] Bank account info for direct deposit (routing number + account number)
      → Check or savings account
      → This is optional but gets your refund 2-3 weeks faster
  [ ] 1098-E form (if claiming student loan interest deduction)
Finding your routing and account numbers: Look at the bottom of your checks, or check your bank’s mobile app under “account details” or “direct deposit information.”

Start the application

Click “Start Free File Fillable Forms”

Create account

Enter your SSN, name, date of birth, and prior year AGI for identity verification. Create a username and password.
SAVE these credentials — you’ll need them if you come back to edit your return.

Select your form

  • Choose Form 1040 if you’re under 65
  • Choose Form 1040-SR if you’re 65 or older

Part 3: Fill In Form 1040

The checklist provides specific values for each line based on YOUR return:

Personal Information

STEP 5: Personal Information (top of Form 1040)
  - First name and middle initial: [Your name from W-2]
  - Last name: [Your last name]
  - Social Security Number: [Enter your full SSN]
  - Filing status: Check "Single"
  - Digital assets: Check "No" (unless you sold/traded cryptocurrency)

Income Section

STEP 7: Income
  - Line 1a: Enter $44,629.35
    (This is your wages from W-2 Box 1)
  - Line 1z: Enter $44,629.35 (same as 1a)
  - Line 9: Enter $44,629.35
    (Total income — same as 1z for your situation)

Schedule 1 (If Applicable)

If you have student loan interest:
STEP 7a: Add Schedule 1
  - Click "Add Form" → search "Schedule 1" → select it
  - Line 21: Enter $1,800.00
    (Your student loan interest deduction)
  - Line 26: Enter $1,800.00
    (Same as Line 21 for your situation)
  - Return to Form 1040
  - Line 10: Enter $1,800.00
    (This is Schedule 1, Line 26)

AGI and Deductions

STEP 8: AGI
  - Line 11: Enter $42,829.35
    (This is your Adjusted Gross Income: Line 9 minus Line 10)

STEP 9: Deductions
  - Line 12a: Enter $15,750.00
    (Standard deduction for single filer under 65)
  - Check the "You as a dependent" box: NO
  - Line 12b: Enter $0

Schedule 1-A (If Applicable)

If you claimed tip, overtime, auto loan, or senior deductions:
STEP 9a: Add Schedule 1-A
  - Click "Add Form" → search "Schedule 1-A" → select it
  - Line 1: Enter $[tip_amount] (tip deduction)     [if applicable]

Tax and Credits

STEP 11: Taxable Income
  - Line 15: Enter $27,079.35
    (Line 11 minus Line 14, or $0 if negative)

STEP 12: Tax
  - Line 16: Enter $3,011.02
    (Tax from brackets — EZFile calculated this for you)
If you have Saver’s Credit:
STEP 13a: Add Form 8880 (Saver's Credit)
  - Click "Add Form" → search "8880" → select it
  - Fill in your retirement contribution amount and AGI
  - The credit flows to Schedule 3, Line 4
  - Then to Form 1040, Line 19
  - Line 19: Enter $205.35

Payments and Refund

    (Federal tax withheld — from W-2 Box 2)

    - Line 35d: Enter your bank account number
Direct deposit tip: Your routing and account numbers are on the bottom of your checks, or in your bank’s mobile app under “account details.”
If you owe money:
STEP 17: Amount You Owe
  - Line 37: Enter $[amount_owed]
    (Line 24 minus Line 33 — this is what you owe)
  - You can pay online at https://www.irs.gov/payments
  - Due by April 15, 2026

Part 4: Review and Submit

Review

Click “Review” or “Check for Errors”. Free File Fillable Forms will flag obvious issues.Double-check these key numbers against your W-2:
  • Line 1a matches W-2 Box 1
  • Line 25a matches W-2 Box 2
  • Your SSN is correct
  • Your name matches your Social Security card

Sign and Submit

  • Enter your occupation (your job title)
  • Enter your phone number
  • Enter your Identity Protection PIN (if you have one from the IRS)
  • E-sign the return
  • Click “Submit” or “File”

Save Confirmation

  • Save your confirmation number
  • Download or print a PDF copy of your filed return
  • Store it securely for at least 3 years (IRS audit window)

Part 5: After Filing

Part 6: State Return Guidance

The checklist provides state-specific instructions based on your W-2 Box 15:

No-Income-Tax States

If you live in AK, FL, NV, NH, SD, TN, TX, WA, or WY:
Good news — your state has no income tax. No state return needed!

States with Simple Filing

Pennsylvania

Illinois

IL uses a flat 4.95% rate on federal AGI minus $2,850 personal exemption.File at: https://mytax.illinois.gov/

Arizona

States with Progressive Brackets

For NY, CA, CT, NJ, and other states with progressive tax systems, the checklist provides:
  • Link to state tax website
  • Brief description of state tax system (rates, deductions, credits)
  • Special notes (e.g., renter credits, property tax deductions)
  • State-specific deadline if different from April 15
Special Deadlines:
  • Virginia: May 1 (not April 15)
  • Hawaii: April 20
  • Delaware: April 30
  • Iowa: April 30
  • Louisiana: May 15

Common Filing Mistakes

Avoid These Common Errors:
  1. Wrong SSN - Double-check your Social Security Number matches your SS card EXACTLY
  2. Name mismatch - Use your legal name as it appears on your SS card (maiden name vs married name)
  3. Math errors - Let the software calculate for you; don’t override calculated fields
  4. Forgetting to sign - The return isn’t filed until you e-sign it
  5. Wrong bank account - Double-check routing and account numbers for direct deposit
  6. Missing schedules - If you claimed deductions, make sure you attached Schedule 1 or 1-A
