Try EZFile with Sample Data

EZFile includes a sample W-2 with fictional data so you can test the plugin without using real tax documents. You’ll see exactly how EZFile processes a W-2 and calculates a complete federal return.
The sample W-2 contains completely fictional data — no real personal information.

Process the Sample W-2

1

Run the file-taxes command

If you installed from the repository:
/ezfile:file-taxes ~/ezfile/Sample-W2.pdf
If you installed from the marketplace, first download the sample:
curl -o ~/Sample-W2.pdf https://raw.githubusercontent.com/stat-guy/ezFile/main/Sample-W2.pdf
/ezfile:file-taxes ~/Sample-W2.pdf
2

Review the W-2 extraction

EZFile will read the W-2 and display the extracted information:
  • Employer name (University of Pittsburgh)
  • Wages from Box 1
  • Federal tax withheld from Box 2
  • Social Security Number (masked to last 4 digits)
  • State and local information
3

Answer intake questions

EZFile will ask a few questions to complete your return:
  • Date of birth
  • Student loan interest (if any)
  • Tips at work
  • Overtime pay
  • New car purchase in 2025
For the sample W-2, you can provide realistic fictional answers to see how they affect the calculation.

View your calculated return

Understanding Your Return

Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) is your total income minus certain deductions like student loan interest. It’s used to calculate eligibility for many tax benefits.Try: /ezfile:explain AGI
Tax brackets are marginal — you pay 10% on the first 11,925,then1211,925, then 12% on the amount above that up to 48,475, and so on. EZFile shows the exact calculation for each bracket.Try: /ezfile:explain tax brackets
For 2025, single filers under 65 get a 15,750standarddeduction.ThisamountissubtractedfromyourAGIbeforecalculatingtax.Ifyoure65orolder,youget15,750 standard deduction. This amount is subtracted from your AGI before calculating tax. If you're 65 or older, you get 17,750.Try: /ezfile:explain standard deduction
New for 2025, Schedule 1-A provides above-the-line deductions for tips, overtime pay, car loan interest, and seniors. These reduce your AGI directly.Try: /ezfile:explain schedule 1-a
