Overview

AppFlowy’s AI Chat feature provides an intelligent conversational assistant that helps you brainstorm ideas, answer questions, and create content. You can chat with AI using various models including GPT-5, Claude, and local AI models.
AI Chat is available in all workspace types, including Vault workspaces for private, offline AI interactions.

Starting an AI Chat

Create a new AI chat page to begin interacting with the AI assistant.

Create a Chat Page

Click the + button in your sidebar and select AI Chat from the page types menu.

Choose Your AI Model

Select your preferred AI model from the model selector. Options include:
  • GPT-5 - Latest OpenAI model with advanced reasoning
  • GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1-mini - Powerful general-purpose models
  • Claude 3.7 Sonnet - Anthropic’s latest model
  • Local AI - Run AI offline with Ollama integration

Start Chatting

Type your message in the input field and press Enter to send. The AI will respond in real-time with streaming responses.

Multiple AI Models

Switch between different AI models to find the best fit for your task:
  • GPT models - Best for creative writing, code generation, and complex reasoning
  • Claude models - Excellent for long-form content and detailed analysis
  • Local AI - Free offline AI using Ollama, perfect for privacy-focused work
You can change the AI model mid-conversation by clicking the model selector at the top of the chat.

Customize how AI responses appear with different layout options:

Chat with Your Documents

Add pages as AI sources to ask questions about your existing content:

Select Source Documents

Click the Add Sources button (file icon) in the chat input area.

Choose Pages

Select one or more pages from your workspace to use as context for the AI.

Ask Questions

The AI will now answer questions based on the content of your selected pages.
When you add document sources, the AI can reference specific information from those pages in its responses.

Save Responses to Documents

Easily move AI-generated content into your workspace:
  1. Select multiple AI messages by clicking the checkbox next to each message
  2. Click Save to Document in the selection banner
  3. Choose a target page or create a new one
  4. The selected messages are added to your document

AppFlowy Prompt Library

Access pre-built prompts for common tasks:
  • Writing assistants - Improve, expand, or rewrite text
  • Content generators - Create blog posts, emails, and more
  • Coding helpers - Debug code, explain functions, write tests
  • Creative prompts - Story ideas, brainstorming, and creative writing
Access the Prompt Library from the chat input area by clicking the prompt icon or typing / to search prompts.

AI Image Generation with DALL-E

Generate stunning AI images directly in your chat: 
Prompt: "Generate an image of a futuristic workspace with holographic displays"
The AI will create custom images based on your text descriptions. You can:
  • Save images to your documents
  • Regenerate with different prompts
  • Use images as page covers or inline content

Chat History and Memory

AI Chat maintains context throughout your conversation:
  • Contextual responses - The AI remembers previous messages in the conversation
  • Follow-up questions - Ask clarifying questions without repeating context
  • Conversation chains - Build on previous responses for deeper exploration
Chat history is stored per chat page. Starting a new chat page creates a fresh conversation without previous context.

Using AI Chat on Mobile

AI Chat is fully supported on iOS and Android:
  • Create and access chat pages from the mobile sidebar
  • Switch AI models with the mobile model selector
  • Use the mobile slash menu to access prompts
  • Save responses to documents on the go

Best Practices

Be Specific

Provide clear, detailed prompts for better responses. Include context, desired format, and any specific requirements.

Iterate Responses

Use the regenerate button to get alternative responses if the first one doesn’t meet your needs.

Add Context

Link relevant pages as sources to help the AI understand your specific situation or project.

Use Custom Prompts

Create reusable prompts for repetitive tasks using the Custom Prompts feature.

Troubleshooting

AI Not Responding

If the AI doesn’t respond:
  1. Check your internet connection (for cloud models)
  2. Verify your AI model selection is available
  3. For local AI, ensure Ollama is running
  4. Try switching to a different AI model

Slow Response Times

  • Cloud models may be slower during peak usage
  • Local AI speed depends on your hardware
  • Complex prompts with many sources take longer to process

Improving Response Quality

  • Provide more specific instructions in your prompts
  • Break complex requests into smaller questions
  • Use the appropriate model for your task (creative vs. analytical)
  • Add relevant document sources for context
