Delivering a best-in-class developer experience is non-negotiable for us. That’s why moving our documentation to Mintlify was the obvious choice.

Honestly, we have found it very, very helpful. If I’m honest with you, it’s been one of the best decisions we have taken and we have made in a long time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mintlify is a great place to start for a small team: Starter is free for up to five editors and includes hosting, search, a custom domain, and a web editor. You get a polished documentation experience without assembling and maintaining a site generator, hosting, and search yourself. Your docs stay in Git as Markdown or MDX, so you own the content and can take it to another platform later. Start with the managed experience now and keep your options open as your project grows.

Compare building and buying

Yes. Starter is free for up to five editors, making it a practical starting point for a small team. Hosting, search, a custom domain, the web editor, authentication, an MCP server, and the API playground are included. You can publish and maintain your docs on Starter without a paid subscription. Upgrade when you need capabilities such as preview deployments, analytics, or AI features. Pro includes unlimited editor seats, with separate credits and limits for AI usage.

See plans and pricing

Yes. You own your documentation. Mintlify stores your pages as Markdown or MDX in Git, and you can connect your own repository or move from a Mintlify-managed repository to your own. If you leave Mintlify, you keep those files and their Git history to use with another documentation platform. You do not need an Enterprise export to keep the source in your own repository. A new site may need adjustments to navigation or custom components, but your written content stays yours. Starting with Mintlify does not commit you to hosting your docs here forever.

Explore the Git-backed workflow

Yes. Use Mintlify for product guides, tutorials, onboarding, help centers, and knowledge bases as well as API references. You do not need an OpenAPI specification. Built-in version and language navigation lets readers switch between releases or translated pages you maintain in Git. Publishing your own translations is separate from paid AI translation. Write pages in Markdown or MDX, or use the browser editor.

Explore version and language navigation

Yes. Product, support, and documentation teams can write and edit in the browser while engineers continue working locally. The web editor supports real-time collaboration, comments, and suggestions. Publishing commits changes to Git, and feature branches let teams review changes before they reach the live site. The web editor is included in the free Starter plan.

See how the web editor works

Yes. Custom components, CSS, and JavaScript are included on every plan. Build interactive examples with React state and event handlers, and reuse components across pages with snippets. Third-party npm libraries require setup. Components run in a sandboxed MDX environment: use named exports, and import dependencies directly in the page. Dynamic imports and JSON imports are not supported. Mintlify handles hosting and the docs interface while you customize the page content.

Explore custom components

Yes. Self-hosting is available on Enterprise through a scoped deployment with the Mintlify team. You can run Mintlify in your own cloud or on-premises environment on AWS or a Kubernetes platform, including Azure and Google Cloud. Your team operates the infrastructure, and Mintlify provides application releases and support. This option is designed for teams with data residency or network isolation requirements.

Review self-hosting requirements

Yes. Mintlify turns your OpenAPI specification into API reference pages with an interactive playground where users can send requests and inspect responses. Keep API reference content alongside guides and tutorials so users can learn a workflow and try the endpoints in the same documentation site. The API playground is included in Starter. If your project also needs SDK generation or a personalized developer portal, evaluate those requirements alongside the documentation experience.

Mintlify serves documentation as Markdown for agents, publishes llms.txt, and hosts an MCP server that connects your content to AI tools. These give agents ways to find and read your product documentation. On paid plans, the assistant helps readers get answers and the agent proposes documentation updates through pull requests. Your content remains the source that people and agents use to understand your product.
