Customization

Gantt Maker provides customization options to adapt the tool to your workflow and visual preferences. All changes are automatically saved using LocalStorage for persistence across sessions.

Color Customization

Colors are central to visual project management in Gantt Maker, helping you instantly identify team members and their assigned tasks.

Team Member Colors

Each team member can be assigned a unique color for instant visual recognition:
  1. Add or select a team member
  2. Assign them a distinct color
  3. All their tasks appear in that color on the timeline
  4. Colors help identify assignments, conflicts, and workload at a glance
Choose colors that are visually distinct from each other to make team member identification easier. The color-coding system is especially valuable when managing 15+ clients or multiple team members simultaneously.

Color Palette for Your Brand

You can customize colors to maintain consistency with your brand or company identity:
  • Assign custom colors to each team member
  • Create color schemes that match your organization’s branding
  • Use consistent color patterns across projects
All color customizations are automatically saved with your project data in LocalStorage.

Auto-Save with LocalStorage

Gantt Maker automatically saves your work as you make changes:
  • Real-time saving: All changes persist immediately
  • No manual save needed: Never worry about losing your work
  • Local storage only: Data stays on your device for complete privacy
  • Browser-based persistence: Return to your work anytime in the same browser

What Gets Saved Automatically

  • Team member names, roles, and color assignments
  • All tasks and their descriptions
  • Task assignments and progress status (Pending/WIP/Completed)
  • Timeline configuration (date mode vs. hour mode)
  • Weekend and date exclusions
  • Custom time blocks for non-working hours
LocalStorage is tied to your browser. If you clear browser data or use a different browser, you’ll need to re-import your projects. Always maintain backups via export.

Export and Import

Exporting Projects

Export your Gantt chart projects for backup and sharing:
  • JSON format: Native format preserves all project data
  • Complete fidelity: All tasks, team members, and settings included
  • Shareable: Send exported files to team members
  • Version control: Save multiple versions of the same project
The README mentions “Exportación nativa” (native export) that allows you to save and share projects easily.

Importing Projects

Import previously exported projects to:
  • Restore backups
  • Load projects shared by team members
  • Work on the same project across different browsers or devices
  • Maintain multiple project versions
Export your projects regularly to maintain backup copies, especially before major changes or when sharing with collaborators.

Backup Strategy

Since Gantt Maker uses LocalStorage:
  1. Regular exports: Save your work frequently as JSON files
  2. External storage: Store exports in cloud drives (Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.)
  3. Version naming: Use descriptive names with dates (e.g., “Q1_Project_2025-03-10.json”)
  4. Multiple backups: Keep copies in more than one location

When to Export

  • After significant project milestones
  • Before making major changes to your timeline
  • At the end of each work session
  • When preparing to share with team members
  • Before clearing browser data or switching devices

Collaboration Through Export/Import

While Gantt Maker is a local-first tool with no backend, you can collaborate by:
  1. Export your project as a JSON file
  2. Share the file via email, Slack, or shared drive
  3. Team members import the file into their Gantt Maker instance
  4. Exchange updated versions as needed
This manual sharing approach ensures complete data privacy—your project data is only shared with people you explicitly send files to.

Best Practices

Establish Color Standards

For team consistency:
  • Agree on color meanings across projects (e.g., red = urgent tasks)
  • Assign each team member a consistent color across all projects
  • Document your color scheme for new team members

Regular Backup Routine

  1. Export at the end of each day or major milestone
  2. Use consistent naming: ProjectName_YYYY-MM-DD.json
  3. Store in a cloud backup location
  4. Keep at least 3 versions for rollback capability

Organizing Multiple Projects

  • Use clear, descriptive project names in your exports
  • Create a dedicated folder structure for your Gantt project exports
  • Include project notes in file names when helpful
