Billing and Usage

Understanding Event-Based Pricing

Mixpanel uses event-based pricing, meaning you pay based on the number of events you track:
An event is any action a user takes that you track in Mixpanel:
  • Page views
  • Button clicks
  • Form submissions
  • Purchases
  • Custom events specific to your product
Each time an event is sent to Mixpanel, it counts toward your event quota.
Mixpanel previously used Monthly Tracked Users (MTU) for billing but has transitioned to event-based pricing for most customers.Event-based pricing benefits:
  • More predictable costs
  • Pay for actual usage
  • No penalties for tracking more users
  • Better alignment with product analytics use cases
Some legacy customers may still be on MTU-based billing. Contact your account manager for details about your specific billing structure.
To monitor your event usage:
  1. Go to Organization Settings
  2. Click Plan Details & Billing
  3. View your current usage and remaining quota
  4. Set up usage alerts to be notified before reaching limits
Best practices:
  • Monitor usage regularly
  • Set up alerts at 75% and 90% of quota
  • Review which events are using the most volume
  • Optimize tracking to focus on valuable events

Cost Optimization

Strategies to Optimize Event Usage

Regularly review what events you’re tracking:
  • Are all events necessary for analysis?
  • Are some events tracked too frequently?
  • Can you consolidate similar events?
  • Are you tracking events for testing/development?
For very high-volume events that don’t require 100% accuracy:
  • Implement sampling on the client side
  • Track a percentage of occurrences
  • Focus full tracking on critical conversion events
Use Lexicon to drop events or properties you no longer need:
  • Review 30-day query volumes in Lexicon
  • Drop events that aren’t being used in analysis
  • Drop properties that aren’t providing value
  • This prevents new data from being ingested
Create Data Views to:
  • Filter out test/internal data
  • Give teams access to only relevant data
  • Reduce the number of events analysts need to sift through
  • Improve query performance
