Furnace supports a vast collection of sound chips from vintage gaming consoles, home computers, arcade machines, and modern fantasy chips. Each chip has unique characteristics and capabilities that define the sound of different gaming eras.

What are Sound Chips?

Sound chips (also called audio processors or PSGs - Programmable Sound Generators) are dedicated hardware components that generate audio in retro computers and gaming consoles. Unlike modern systems that use general-purpose audio, these chips have specific architectures that define their unique sound characteristics.

Chip Categories

Furnace organizes chips into several categories based on their synthesis method and origin:

FM Synthesis

Yamaha’s famous FM chips including OPL, OPN, and OPLL families

Square Wave

Classic PSG chips with square wave and noise generators

Sample-Based

PCM and ADPCM chips that play digital samples

Wavetable

Chips using custom waveforms and wavetable synthesis

Console Chips

Sound chips from Nintendo, Sega, and other game consoles

Computer Chips

Audio hardware from home computers like C64, Amiga, and Atari

Modern & Fantasy

Contemporary and imaginary chips designed for modern systems

Complete Chip List

Below is the full list of chips that Furnace supports. Click any chip name to view detailed documentation, effects list, and configuration options.

FM Synthesis Chips

Yamaha’s FM synthesis chips were widely used in arcade machines, home computers, and consoles. They use frequency modulation to create complex, metallic sounds.

Square Wave PSGs

Classic programmable sound generators that produce square waves, triangle waves, and noise. These define the sound of 8-bit gaming.

Sample-Based Chips

These chips play back pre-recorded digital audio samples, either as PCM or compressed ADPCM.

Wavetable Chips

These chips use programmable waveforms to create custom timbres.

Console-Specific Chips

Sound processors from popular gaming consoles and their expansions.

Computer Chips

Sound hardware from vintage home computers.

Modern & Fantasy Chips

Contemporary chips and imaginary sound processors designed for modern retro projects.

Other Chips

Additional specialized chips:
  • 5E01 - MMC5 variant
  • Dave - SAM Coupé sound chip
  • Bubble System WSG - Konami arcade wavetable
  • MultiPCM - Sega arcade multi-PCM
  • T6W28 - Neo Geo Pocket PSG
  • YMU759 - Yamaha MA-2 (read-only support)

System Presets

Furnace includes pre-configured system presets that combine multiple chips as they appeared in actual hardware. See the System Presets page for details on systems like:
  • Sega Genesis (YM2612 + SN76489)
  • Neo Geo (YM2610)
  • NES with various expansion chips
  • Arcade boards (Capcom CPS-1, CPS-2, etc.)
  • And many more!
