This guide will help you get started with Elemental Wizards, from choosing your elemental school to casting your first spells.

Choose your elemental school

Elemental Wizards offers three distinct magical paths, each with unique spells and playstyles:

Water

Versatile healing and damage. Splash heals allies and damages enemies, while advanced spells like Hydro Beam apply the Soaked effect.

Earth

Powerful projectile damage and defense. Stone Throw deals area damage, while Stone Flesh provides armor and damage reduction.

Air

Crowd control and knockback. Gust pushes enemies away, while Tornado summons devastating cyclones that lift foes into the air.
You’re not locked into a single school—you can learn spells from multiple elements and even use the Elemental Staff to cast all three types!

Craft your first spell book

To begin your elemental journey, you’ll need a Tome (spell book) for your chosen school.
1

Gather materials

Each tome requires:
  • 1 Book
  • 1 Lapis Lazuli
  • 2 element-specific items
Tome of Water requires:
  • Kelp
  • Prismarine Crystals
2

Craft the tome

Place all four ingredients in a crafting table using shapeless crafting. The order doesn’t matter.
3

Learn your spells

Right-click while holding the tome to learn all basic spells for that element. The tome will be consumed.

Obtain a weapon

You’ll need a wand or staff to cast your spells. Each element has its own weapon progression.

Starting weapons

Kelp Wand - Basic water weaponCraft with kelp and basic materials. Provides water spell power to cast your aqua spells.

Weapon progression

As you advance, you can craft more powerful weapons:
  1. Wands (Tier 1) - Kelp, Clay, Feather
  2. Element Wands (Tier 2) - Aqua, Terra, Wind
  3. Netherite Wands (Tier 3) - Netherite variants
  4. Staves (Tier 2-4) - More powerful, two-handed weapons
  5. Special Staves - Crystal, Ruby, Aeternium variants with unique bonuses
The Elemental Staff provides spell power for all three elements, allowing you to cast water, earth, and air spells with a single weapon.

Cast your first spell

Now that you have a spell book and weapon, you’re ready to cast spells!

Equip your weapon

Hold your wand or staff in your main hand. Your spell power will appear in your stats.
2

4

Spell costs

Most spells require elemental stones to cast:
  • Water spells use Aqua Stones
  • Earth spells use Terra Stones

How to learn advanced spells

  • Villager trading - Wizard villagers may offer spell scrolls
  • Crafting - Some spell scrolls can be crafted (check JEI/REI)
Advanced spells require higher spell power to be effective. Make sure to upgrade your weapon and armor as you progress!

Craft elemental armor

Enhance your spell power and survivability with elemental armor sets.

Armor tiers

  1. Elemental Apprentice (Tier 1) - Basic starting armor
  2. Element-specific (Tier 2) - Aqua, Terra, or Wind armor
  3. Netherite variants (Tier 3) - Enhanced durability and stats
  4. Elite sets (Tier 5) - Hurricane, Mountain, and Ocean sets
Each full armor set provides:
  • Increased spell power for your element
  • Armor and toughness stats
  • Set bonuses (for tier 5 sets)

Tips for success

  • Combine elements: Use spells from multiple schools to adapt to different situations
  • Watch your resources: Keep a good supply of elemental stones for spell casting
  • Soaked synergy: Water spells deal bonus damage to fire mobs and apply Soaked, which makes targets vulnerable
  • Crowd control: Air spells excel at controlling groups—use Aeroburst or Tornado when surrounded
  • Defensive play: Earth’s Stone Flesh can save your life by reducing incoming damage by 50% at full health
  • Boss immunity: Some spell effects like knockup don’t work on bosses (entities tagged #c:bosses)
