Comments are the primary communication tool in Kitsu, enabling teams to provide feedback, ask questions, and discuss work directly on tasks.

Adding Comments

Add comments to any task with:
  • Text feedback: Written notes and instructions
  • Status changes: Update validation status while commenting
  • Mentions: Tag team members with @username
  • Attachments: Include images and files
  • Checklists: Create task lists within comments
  • Replies: Respond to existing comments
Comments on tasks create news feed entries and send notifications to relevant team members.

Comment Structure

Each comment displays:

Header Information

  • Validation status: Color-coded tag showing task status
  • Author avatar: Profile picture of the commenter
  • Author name: Full name of the person who commented
  • Timestamp: Relative time (“2 hours ago”) or absolute date

Content

  • Comment text: Formatted text with mention highlights
  • Attachments: Embedded images or file links
  • Checklists: Interactive task lists
  • Replies: Threaded conversation

Actions

  • Like button: Acknowledge comments with thumbs up
  • Reply button: Start a threaded conversation
  • Menu: Pin, edit, or delete (if permitted)

Mentions

Mention team members to notify them:

Type @ to mention someone:

  • Autocomplete shows team members as you type
  • Mentioned users receive notifications
  • Mentions are highlighted in the comment

Department Mentions

Mention entire departments:
@animation Please review before final render
@lighting Ready for your pass
Department mentions notify all members of that department, making it easy to alert whole teams.

Task Type Mentions

Reference task types with #:
Waiting for #modeling to complete
Depends on #rigging approval

Replies

Create threaded conversations:

Click the attachment icon and select files from your computer
Image attachments are displayed inline. Other file types appear as download links with paperclip icons.

Create interactive task lists in comments:

Timecodes

Reference specific frames in comments:

Adding Timecodes

Type @frame to insert the current frame:
Issue at @frame - character's hand clips through table
  • Automatically includes revision and frame number
  • Clickable to jump to that frame in preview player
  • Works in comments, replies, and checklists

Timecode Format

Timecodes include:
  • Version/revision number
  • Timestamp (HH:MM:SS:FF)
  • Absolute frame number

Status Changes

Update task status when commenting:

Status Indicator

Comments show the validation status:
  • Bold border: Status was changed with this comment
  • Thin border: Status remained the same
  • Color-coded: Matches status color (green for done, red for retake)

Status Change Comments

When changing status:
"Status changed to: Retake"
"Status changed to: Done"
Changing status while commenting creates a notification and news feed entry highlighting the status change.

Preview File Comments

Comments with preview file uploads:

Revision Badge

Comments with previews show:
  • Revision number: “Revision 3”
  • Preview link: Opens file in preview player
  • Validation status: Color dot (validated/rejected/neutral)

Publishing vs Commenting

When uploading a preview:
  • With status change: “Published” and changed status
  • Without status change: “Commented on”

Comment Management

Pinning Comments

Pin important comments:
  • Pinned comments appear with special border
  • Shows “PINNED” badge
  • Accessible to supervisors and managers

Editing Comments

Edit your own comments:
  • Click menu icon (chevron down)
  • Select “Edit”
  • Update text and save
  • Shows “Edited by” indicator

Deleting Comments

Delete comments (if permitted):
  • Own comments can be deleted
  • Admins can delete any comment
  • Confirmation required
Deleting a comment also removes all its replies and cannot be undone.

Acknowledgments (Likes)

Show appreciation with likes:
  • Thumbs up icon: Click to acknowledge
  • Counter: Shows total acknowledgments
  • Hover tooltip: Lists who liked the comment
  • Visual feedback: Icon fills when you’ve liked

Client Comments

Comments from clients are marked specially:
  • “Comment from client” badge: Highlighted in pink/red
  • Copy icon: Duplicate client comment to respond
  • Visibility controls: Respect client access permissions
The copy icon on client comments makes it easy to quote their feedback in your response.

Best Practices

Use timecodes and checklists to give precise, actionable feedback.
Only mention people who need to see the comment to avoid notification fatigue.
Keep conversations organized by replying to relevant comments instead of creating new top-level comments.
Include relevant information and reference frames/versions to make feedback clear.
Use likes to show you’ve seen and agree with feedback without adding unnecessary comments.
Change task status when commenting to keep the pipeline flowing.
